Poválečný vývoj Západního Berlína ovlivňovaly demografické a ekonomické pro- blémy, ale i fakt, že se město stalo bojištěm studené války, kdy mezi sebou soupeřily dva politické systémy. Západní Berlín měl pro Západ bezpochyby symbolickou hodnotu, což mu poskytovalo bezpečnostní záruky. Ovšem pokud se nechtěl spokojit s pouhým přeží- váním, bylo třeba zaměřit se na image politiku, která by ze Západního Berlína vytvořila sebevědomé atraktivní město. Cílem práce je zmapovat proces budování image a zároveň se pokusit tento vývoj interpretovat s pomocí konceptu měkké síly. Hypotéza předpo- kládá, že hlavním tvůrcem image města byl jeho starosta Willy Brandt. Jelikož pojem image není v historii jako studijním oboru příliš metodicky ukotven, kombinuje práce poznatky ze sekundární literatury z různých oborů a ty doplňuje o Brandtovy projevy, dopisy a články z novin Der Spiegel. Práce dochází k závěru, že proces budování image byl započat již během války skrze narativ o svobodě a Willy Brandt v něm sehrál důleži- tou roli v době, kdy byla postavena berlínská zeď a bylo třeba k městu přilákat pozornost Západu. To se Brandtovi povedlo a v tomto ohledu tak disponoval měkkou silou. V pří- padě Západního Berlína to již tak očividné není. Město se sice snažilo zatraktivnit se v očích Západu a tím si získat jeho... Title Image of West-Berlin: From the search for its own identity to the commander of the front town, Willy Brandt Abstract The post-war development of West Berlin was influenced by demographic and economic problems, but also by the fact that the city became a battlefield of the Cold War, where two political systems competed with each other. West Berlin undoubtedly had a symbolic value for the West and this fact provided the city with security guarantees. However, if West Berlin did not want to be satisfied with mere survival, it had to focus on an image policy that would make it a self-confident and attractive city. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the process of image building and at the same time try to interpret this development with the help of the concept of soft power. The hypothesis assumes that the main creator of the city's image was its mayor, Willy Brandt. Since the concept of image is not very methodically anchored in history as a field of study, the thesis combines find- ings from secondary literature from various fields and supplements them with Brandt's speeches, letters and articles from the newspaper Der Spiegel.
