Abstrakt: Control of the vital functions of photoperiodically sensitive organisms depends on the correct synergism of the circadian and photoperiodic clocks. The relationship between these two timekeeping systems was studied in photoperiodically sensitive larvae of the fruitfly, Chymomyza costata. The distribution of the Tim protein was observed in their central nervous system, which is believed to play a crucial role in both types of the above-mentioned oscillators. Tim positive cells were detected in both the central brain and the ventral ganglion. The absence of the Tim protein in the central oscillator cells indicates a different way of regulating the circadian clock than in the D. melanogaster model. The centre of the photoperiodic clock could be located in the abdominal part of the ventral ganglion, where 5-6 bilateral pairs of the Tim-positive neurons were detected, with one neuron from each pair in direct contact with serotonin-containing neurons. Serotonin, as a biogenic amine that controls the synthesis of melatonin, plays a potential role in the diapause induction. Since the expression of Cry in the circadian clock in C. costata shows changes in different photoperiodic regimes, it can be assumed that although the circadian and photoperiodic clock systems are located in different parts of the CNS, they share an input pathway.
