Taiwan has been generally considered a moderate player in the South China Sea's tense waters. Despite its low-profile policy, the Republic of China (ROC) has one of the most extensive territorial claims in the South China Sea, in accordance with its 1947 Constitution. The ROC's South China Sea policy is influenced by Cross-Strait relations, which are the main concern of any ROC administration. This thesis investigates Tsai Ying-wen's approach to the South China Sea by examining its interaction with the One China principle and looking at its interplay with the New Southbound Policy. It finds that Tsai Ying-wen's administration has further de-emphasized Taiwan's claims over the area, for both domestic and international reasons. This approach strategically fosters the maintenance of the status quo and paves the way for strengthening ties with Southeast Asian countries and maintaining the United States' support, partially confirming Waltz's neorealist approach. Tchaj-wan je obecně považován za jednoho z umírněných hráčů v napjatých vodách Jihočínského moře. Navzdory své nenápadné politice má však Čínská republika (ROC) v souladu se svou ústavou z roku 1947 nejrozsáhlejší územní nároky v Jihočínském moři. Vztahy mezi Tchaj-pejí a Pekingem jsou hlavním zájmem každé administrativy Čínské republiky a ovlivňují její politiku v Jihočínském moři trváním Pekingu na tzv. principu jedné Číny. Tato diplomová práce zkoumá přístup prezidentky Tsai Ying-wen k problematice Jihočínského moře tím, že analyzuje interakci Tchaj-wanu s principem jedné Číny. Dále se pak zaměřuje na to, jak tato interakce ovlivňuje formulaci tzv. New South Bound Policy a vztahy Tchaj-wanu vůči zemím ASEAN. Tato práce zjišťuje, že administrativa Tsai Ying- wen z mezinárodních i domácích důvodů klade menší důraz na tchajwanské nároky v této oblasti. Tento přístup strategický podporuje zachování status quo a otevírá cestu k posílení vazeb se zeměmi jihovýchodní Asie a udržení podpory ze strany Spojených států, což částečně potvrzuje Waltzův neorealistický přístup.
