Funkční znaky neboli traity jsou rozšířeným tématem napříč obory a ani lišejníky nejsou výjimkou. Jsou to vlastnosti, které definují organismus od morfologických znaků přes anatomii až po fyziologii daného jedince včetně interakce a ovlivňování okolí. Nejčastěji studovaným funkčním znakem u lišejníků je typ stélky. Dalším běžně studovaným traitem je typ fotobionta, u kterého je např. výskyt řasy rodu Trentepohlia negativně ovlivněn silnými mrazy. Tím pádem se početnost lišejníků s touto řasou snižuje s rostoucí nadmořskou výškou. Do běžných funkčních znaků u lišejníků také zahrnujeme jak způsob rozmnožování, tak i sekundární metabolity, které lišejníky chrání například před UV světlem anebo herbivory. Funkční znaky pak společně tvoří funkční diverzitu, která je dalším způsobem jak měřit diverzitu na planetě, kdy ne vždy musí být nejrozmanitějším ekosystémem ten s největším počtem druhů. Může to být právě ten ekosystém, který má největší funkční diverzitu, která primárně počítá s funkčními znaky. Indexy funkční diverzity nám poté mohou odhalit unikátní společenstva, která by měla být předmětem ochrany. Avšak definice ani výpočet funkční diverzity nejsou přesně určené, i proto se používají různé indexy. U lišejníků se nejčastěji používá Rao index kvadratické entropie. Traits are the attributes that define the organism from morphological features through anatomy to the physiology of the individual, including interaction in environmental and environmental influences. The most frequently studied functional trait of lichens is the type of thallus. Another commonly studied trait is the type of photobiont, where the presence of algae Trentepohlia is negatively affected by frost and because of this its number decreases with increasing altitude. Another functional trait of lichens which is studied is reproduction, and also secondary metabolites, which protect lichens, for example, against UV light or herbivores. Functional traits together form functional diversity, which is another way how to measure diversity on a planet where the most diverse ecosystem is not always the one with the highest number of species. Functional diversity indices then can reveal unique communities that should be protected. However, neither the definitions nor the calculation of functional diversity are exatly specified, we use different indices. The Rao index of quadratic entropy is most often used for lichens.
