Během kvartéru docházelo k cyklickému střídání teplých a chladných období - interglaciálů a glaciálů. Za posledních 2,5 milionu let proběhlo osmnáct až dvacet těchto cyklů. Tyto klimatické změny ovlivňované mimo jiné také Milankovičovými cykly působily na výšku mořské hladiny, rozlohu zalednění nebo rozložení vegetačních pásem. Všechny tyto faktory ovlivňovaly společenstva savců, jejich rozšíření, migrace a také vymírání některých skupin. Během glaciálů se zvětšovala plocha kontinentálních i horských ledovců a zároveň docházelo k poklesu hladiny oceánu. To během těchto chladných období umožnilo mnohým druhům savců průnik na nová území díky vzniku pevninských mostů. Proto mohli savci z jindy izolovaných oblastí vzájemně ovlivňovat. Během teplých intergalciálů naopak docházelo k ústupu ledovců a v důsledku zvýšení hladiny oceánu k přerušení migračních cest přes pevninské mosty. Mnohé, převážně ostrovní, populace tak byly izolovány a často se vyvinuly v nové endemické druhy. Over the past 2.5 million years there was eighteen or twenty these cycles. These climate changes influenced by, except other, Milankovic cycles caused at sea level, extent of glaciation or distribution of vegetation zones. All these factors affected the communities of mammals, their distribution, migration and extinction of some groups of mammals. Area of continental and mountain glaciers expanded as well as levels of the ocean decreased during the glacials. Many species of mammals penetrated into new territory with the emergence of land-bridges a mammals from isolated areas could interact during cold periods. There was a retreat of glaciers and sea level rise and the migration routes through the land bridges was interrupted during the interglacials.
