V příspěvku jsou diskutována témata podmínek udržitelnosti venkovského osídlení a významu venkova pro udržitelnost českého sídelního systému. Podíl venkovského obyvatelstva včetně periferních regionů v Česku stále mírně stoupá. Problémem se zdá být nižší kvalifikační struktura obyvatel. V sídelním systému nabízí venkov alternativní životní způsob, bližší kontakty s přírodou a zachování regionální identity v procesu globalizace. The conditions of sustainability of the Czech rural settlement are discussed in the paper. The ratio of rural population is still slightly increasing in the Czech Republic. The lower qualification structure seems to be a problem. In the system of settlements, the countryside offers an alternative lifestyle, closer contact with the nature and preservation of regional identity in the globalization process.
