The paper summarizes the role of computers in the twenty five years since the establishment of the Institute of Geonics Cz.Acad.Sci. It recalls the importance of computer systems and computer science in general, especially for mathematical modelling, one of the most important research fields of the institute. In the course of time computers, networks and Internet are unavoidable for each of the fields of study of the institute. The contribution surveys the main stages in this development, from the point of view of demanding computations in particular, and mentions various computers and hardware characteristic for each stage. Příspěvek shrnuje roli výpočetní techniky během uplynulých dvaceti pěti let existence Ústavu geoniky AV ČR. Připomíná, že výpočetní technika a informatika obecně má od samého založení ústavu významnou úlohu, především jako nepostradatelný nástroj pro matematické modelování, jedno z nejdůležitějších zaměření ústavu. Postupem času se ovšem bez počítačů, sítě a Internetu neobejde žádný z oborů pěstovaných na ÚGN a dnes konec konců ani ústav jako takový. Příspěvek popisuje důležité etapy v tomto vývoji, především z pohledu náročných vědeckých výpočtů,a přibližuje různé technické prostředky, které ho provázely.
