Předmětem bakalářské práce je teoretická analýza a interpretace kultury skupiny Asmat se zvláštním zřetelem k jejich totemům předků bis. Tyto totemy se úzce vázaly k lovu lebek a kanibalismu. Součástí asmatské kultury bylo uctívání duší předků, které se pohybovaly mezi světem živých a světem mrtvých. V jejich představách byly tyto duše neustále přítomny mezi živými a bylo nutné je uctívat formou složitých rituálů, jejichž součástí byla výroba obřadních předmětů ze dřeva. Totemy bis jsou nejvýraznější ukázkou asmatského umění dřevořezby a hrály důležitou roli při obřadních cyklech, které měly pomstít smrt a nastolit rovnováhu ve světě duší. Cílem práce je podat ucelený náhled na kulturu Asmatů a podrobně popsat totemy bis, jejich funkci, jednotlivé fáze výroby a obřadní cyklus bis, který se k nim váže. The object of this thesis is to theoretically analyse and interpret the Asmat people regarding their ancestors poles bis. These ancestors poles were connected with head hunting and cannibalism. Worshipping ancestors spirits, that travelled between world of living anf world of dead, was part of Asmat culture. The Asmats believed that these spirits were always present among living and therefore they were to be worshipped through complex ritual cycles and ritual wood carvings objects. Ancestor poles were the most remarkable among Asmat wood art and played important role in ritual cycle called bis, that was nessesary to avenge death and bring balance to the world of spirits. Objective of this thesis is to give comprehensive view of the Asmat culture and to describe bis poles in detail, together with their function, phases of progress and ritual cycle bis, that was part of it.
