Zájmovou oblastí této práce je chilská část Patagonie. Ta se rozprostírá přes chilské regiony Los Lagos, Aysén a Magallanes. Zdejší prostředí je ovlivněno hned několika jevy, které zde působí jak zvlášť, tak převážně společně. Místní tektonické procesy, zejména subdukce litosférické desky Nazca pod desku Jihoamerickou, ovlivňují rizikové procesy zemětřesení (a na ně navazující tsunami a sesuvy) a vulkanismus. Tektonika se také podílela na tvorbě místního reliéfu, který má společně s klimatem (a jeho změnami) vliv také na specifický druh povodní, vznikajících náhlým uvolněním tavné vody z glaciálního jezera, známý pod anglickou zkratkou GLOF. Tyto geomorfologické procesy probíhají na Zemi již miliony let, některé z nich se ovšem ve chvíli, kdy se v okruhu jejich působnosti usadil člověk, staly rizikovými. It is spread across the Chilean regions of Los Lagos, Aysén and Magallanes. The local environment is influenced by several phenomena, which act separately and predominantly together. Local tectonic processes, especially the subduction of the Nazca Plate under the South American Plate, affect the risky processes of earthquakes (and subsequent tsunamis and landslides) and volcanism. The tectonics also contributed to the creation of a local relief, which, together with the climate (and its changes), also affected the specific type of floods called Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). These geomofphological processes take place on earth for millions of years, but some of them became to be risky at the moment people began settling in territory of their influence.
