Liberec sehrával významnou roli v česko-německých vztazích již od roku 1918, kdy byla vytvořena provincie Deutsch Böhmen. Za druhé světové války pak jeho význam ještě vzrostl, neboť se stal hlavním městem Sudetské župy a je také znám jako rodiště Konrada Henleina. Ve městě žilo na konci války podle odhadů 80 % německých obyvatel a tento fakt ovlivnil jak průběh osvobození, tak i následné odsunové akce. Osvobození nebylo na Liberecku očekáváno s nadšením, jako tomu bylo v jiných městech mimo pohraničí. Bylo spíše charakterizováno zmatkem, nejistotou a strachem před sovětskou armádou, která se mstila německým zajatcům za válečná příkoří. Osvobození znamenalo pro Liberec konec bezmála sedmi let německého útlaku, nicméně nebylo oslavováno. Mnoho Němců odcházelo z města ještě za války, včetně velké části nacistického vedení. Naopak sem přicházeli navrátilci z války - lidé, jež se po obsazení Sudet přestěhovali do vnitrozemí a dále ti, kteří s Libercem neměli nic společného a jen zde chtěli začít nový život. Situace byla velmi nepřehledná a počty obyvatel a jejich národnostní složení uvádí literatura často odlišně. Zajímavé je dále také sledovat, jaké aspekty vedly k tomu, že se různá města v Československu postavila ke stejnému problému naprosto odlišným způsobem. Liberec played an important role in czech-german relations since 1918, when the province Deutsch Böhmen was created. Its importance grew even further during World War II as it became the capital of the Liberec sudeten and it was also highly known as the birthplace of Konrad Henlein. In the city, there lived an estimated 80% of the German population at the end of the war, and this fact influenced the course of both liberation and the subsequent expatriatrion actions. Liberation was not expected with enthusiasm at all, as was the case in inland cities. It was rather characterized by confusion, uncertainty and fear of the Soviet Army, which was getting revenge for Germans of war injustice. The liberation meant the end of nearly seven years of German oppression, however, it was not celebrated. Many Germans were leaving the city during the war, including a large part of the Nazi leadership. Conversely, three main groups of people were coming back to the city: the returnees came here from the war, people who moved after the occupation to inland and also people who had nothing to do here and just wanted to start a new life.
