Tato práce se zabývá osobou Josepha Chamberlaina, významného radikálního politika druhé poloviny 19. století a počátku 20. století. Jejím cílem je zjistit, jaké události formovaly jeho politický vývoj od podporovatele volného obchodu po nejzarytějšího zastánce celní reformy, a jaké faktory vedly k neúspěchu jeho kampaně za přijetí celní reformy. Práce se zabývá politickým životem politika a soustředí se na významné mezníky jeho kariéry, jako byla změna politické strany, volba ministrem pro kolonie, búrská válka a vrcholí kampaní podporující přijetí celní reformy na přelomu 19. a 20. století. Celní reforma rozpoutala bouřlivou debatu a způsobila rozkol uvnitř vlády mezi opozicí i v rámci koalice Konzervativní strany a Unionistů a stála u konce politické kariéry jednoho z nejvýznamnějších politiků viktoriánské éry. V zavedení cel viděl Joseph Chamberlain příležitost, jak financovat sociální reformy, které prosazoval celý svůj profesní život a hlavně možnost upevnit vazby mezi koloniemi a mateřskou zemí. Jeho politický život se odehrává v době, kdy je rozloha Britského impéria největší, nicméně Británie se ocitá na ústupu ze světového prvenství v mezinárodním obchodu a průmyslové výroby. This bachelor thesis deals with the person of Joseph Chamberlain, significant radical politician of the second half of 19th Century and early 20th Century. Main task of this thesis is find out, which events formed his political development from the supporter of free trade to strict protagonist of Tariff Reform and which factors led to the failure to his tariff reform campaign. On the basis of studying especially foreign, british, literature and academic articles, I analysis the topic fixed by this bachelor thesis. The campaign for gain support to tariff reform and economic protectionism was most pronounced at the turn of 19th and 20th Century and caused a dispute in the government and also in ruling coalition of Conservatives and Liberal Unionist. A failure of this campaign was at the end of political career one of the most influental politician of viktorian age. In tariff reform he saw an opportunity how could the government financed advanced social reform and esecially chance to strengthen bounds between colonies and the mother land. He trusted that the economic ties are the most infliental ties of basis imperial federation.
