Město Atlanta v Georgii je v současné době považováno za "černou Mekku" Spojených států Amerických. Pojmem "černá Mekka" je označováno sídlo, které nejvíce přitahuje afroamerické občany, kteří zde posléze hledají lepší životní podmínky a zejména lepší pracovní příležitosti. Tento fakt je poněkud překvapující už z toho důvodu, že Atlanta leží v regionu takzvaného hlubokého Jihu, kde byla situace amerických černochů po dlouhou dobu výrazně složitější než v jiných částech země, mimo jiné i kvůli existenci nespočtu diskriminačních segregačních zákonů souhrnně označovaných zákony Jima Crowa. Tyto zákony platily v Georgii od počátku až do poloviny 60. let dvacátého století. Tato práce by měla odpovědět na otázku, jaké faktory ovlivnily, že se z jižanského města, jakým je Atlanta, stalo černochy celonárodně vyhledávané místo pobytu, a jak bylo těchto faktorů v průběhu vývoje města dosaženo. V práci je použito metody případové studie. Atlanta se stala černou Mekkou díky tomu, že se jí podařilo splnit několik podmínek. Afroameričané mají město politicky pod kontrolou, město nabízí Afroameričanům velmi dobré pracovní příležitosti, fungují zde kvalitní vzdělávací instituce a vztahy s ostatními skupinami obyvatel jsou relativně dobré. Těchto bodů bylo dosaženo mimo jiné díky jednání osob jako byl například... Atlanta, Georgia is labeled as Black Mecca of the United States of America since the 1970s. The term "Black Mecca" describes a city which attracts African Americans in big numbers. These people seek better living conditions and especially job opportunities. This fact is quite surprising, because Atlanta belongs to a region of Deep South, where the conditions of African Americans were harsher than in other parts of the country for a very long time besides other things because of "Jim Crow" segregation laws. This work should present which factors are responsible for the fact that a southern city such as Atlanta became a sought-after center of African American immigration and how these factors were reached. Atlanta became Black Mecca, because it achieved several goals. African Americans politically control the city, Atlanta offers superior job opportunities, high quality educational institutions are located within the city and the relations between white and black people are quite harmonic. These points were achieved besides other things thanks to the people that lived in the city including influential figures such as William Hartsfield, Ivan Allen, Robert Woodruff, Maynard Jackson, Andrew Young and many more.
