Tvar Země je pro geodetické výpočty příliš složitý, a tak pro zjednodušení volíme různé referenční plochy. K určení výšky bodu si tedy zvolíme vztažnou plochu a pak zjišťujeme vzdálenost určovaného bodu nad touto plochou, např. měřením převýšení od známého bodu pomocí geometrické nivelace ze středu. Earth´s shape is too difficult for geodesy, that´s why we choose different planes of reference. To find out point´s height means to define a plane of reference and to state vertical distance between the plane and the point, it can be done with levelling.
