Vortex shedding from a bluff body is a classical problem for fluid mechanics. Since the time of Prof. Strouhal at the end of the 19th century, the phenomenon has been frequently studied. This contribution introduces (1) the historical context, (2) motivations and goals of the recent investigations, and (3) recent original results of research on the fluid dynamics and heat transfer of heated and cooled cylinders in the cross-flow, obtained mainly in the Institute of Thermomechanics. Vytváření vírů v úplavu za špatně obtékaným tělesem je jedním ze základních příkladů mechaniky tekutin, který byl zkoumán již mnohokrát od dob Prof. Strouhala na konci 19. století. Tato práce shrnuje (1) historické souvislosti, (2) motivace a cíle nedávných studií a (3) výsledky nejnovějších výzkumů v Ústavu termomechaniky, které byly dosaženy při výzkumu ohřívaného i ochlazovaného válce, a které se zabývaly touto problematikou zároveň z pohledu mechaniky tekutin i nauky o přestupu tepla.
