Zemětřesení jako jedna z přírodních katastrof ovlivňuje životy lidí a jejich majetek i v dnešní vyspělé době. Seismologie a geologie významným způsobem pokročily v poznání fyzikálních a geologických jevů, spojených se zemětřesením. Mnohé z následků zemětřesení se daří významně omezit. Ohodnocení seismického rizika a správné užití antiseismických prvků v konstrukcích odolných budov nebo systémy včasného varování dopady tohoto ničivého živlu podstatně snižují. K účinné ochraně před zemětřesením by přispěla především jeho správná a včasná predikce, která ale zatím zůstává výzvou pro geovědce na celém světě. Summary: The earthquake, one of the natural disasters, affects the lives of people and their properties even in today's advanced age. Seismology and Geology have made a significant progress in understanding the physical and geological phenomenons connected to earthquakes. Thus many consequences of earthquakes can be considerably reduced. Seismic risk estimation and a proper use of antiseismic elements in structures of resistant buildings as well as of early warning systems significantly lowers the impacts of this destructive element. Especially the correct and on-time prediction could contribute to an effective protection from earthquakes but this still remains a challenge for geologists worldwide.
