Abstract: The inception of cracks that are observed on the surface of articular cartilage is explained by taking into account the microstructure: There are - under the surface - dense collagen fibers lying parallel to the surface of cartilage an orientated in one direction. It is shown that an impact loading can lead to rupture of these fibers and subsequent creation of cracks.
