Abstract: In the paper I deal with the area of bonsai, the development of Japanese gardens and their influence on the human's mental state. The first part of the paper describes the history and the present of the ancient bonsai art from the perspective of the aims and intentions of bonsai growing, from the perspective of the connection between bonsai and the world of nature, and also from the perspective of the artistic traditions and compositional principles. The second part deals with the development of Japanese gardens and their differences from western gardens. It involves the description of individual historical periods of the development of Japanese gardens and the overview of the principles of their creation with the enumeration of the compositional elements which are characteristic for individual periods. The third part describes the harmonious alliance between humans and nature through the art of bonsai growing which is present in many generations and can be deservedly designated the art of timeless extent.
