The thesis essay "Satyr in Greek thought, art and later European tradition" is attempting to provide a coherent exposition of the iconographical depiction of Satyr over the course of the Antic and its subsequent reminiscence in European painting of 15th through 20th century. A pivotal part of the thesis consists of perception of the satyr figures in ancient thought and art. At the beginning it centers around the mythological background, based on which the fundaments of satyrs existence are explained, along with their assignment to the ancient mythological context. In this part, a special attention is being paid to the mutual relationships of the satyrs with their female counterparts - nymphs and maenads. Following that, the thesis dissects the satyr iconography in red figured and black figured vase painting. Ensuing is a section summarizing significant Antic sculptures depicting this mythical figure. At the end of the section dealing with Satyrs in the art of the Antic is a compendium of mosaics and frescoes. The final part of the thesis contains an overview of the most significant works of art from 15th to 16th century inspired by the very Satyrs and their depiction in the Antic.
