Téma ruské vesnice v dílech dvou klasiků jsem si pro svou diplomovou práci vybrala proto, že skýtá příležitost zabývat se přístupem ruských spisovatelů ke všem stěžejním problémům života, které jsou na vesnici patrné ve své nej základnější podobě. Pohled na člověka v jeho původním přirozeném prostředí odhaluje kořeny, z nichž vychází i dnešní člověk. S výhodou odstupu více než jednoho století nám umožňuje zkoumat jistoty i nejistoty tehdejšího Člověka, jeho silné stránky i slabosti, jeho spojení s přírodou i se sebou samým skrze myšlení, city, filozofii a náboženství. In the nineteenth century, Russia went through a lot of changes, striving to overcome its cultural backwardness compared to Western Europe, and gradually assimilating Western European civilization. However, most Russia's population did not trust this civilisation as well as the urban life style, to which it was forced to adapt. Tolstoy and Chekhov are among those representatives of the Russian intelligentsia who considerably contributed to analytically distilling the theoretical problems of their time, such as those to which the following questions were linked:
