Tato pozvaná úvodní přednáška se zabývá historií polymerních materiálů. Je zdůrazněna role jednotlivých osobností a také náhody při vědeckých a technických objevech. Je ukázáno, že současný pronikavý rozvoj komoditních polymerů souvisí s příznivým poměrem mezi cenou a užitnými vlastnostmi. This invited introductory lecture concerns the historical perspective of polymeric materials. The role of individualpersonalities and also serendipity in scientific and technological discoveries is discussed. It is shown that the present marked development of commodity polymers is connected with their favourable price/performance ratio.
