Field emission emitters have significantly improved the coherence of electron guns in electron microscopes and allowed to reach atomic-scale resolution in the case of crystal imaging. Even now, thirty years after the first application of field emission emitters, one can hardly say that the development of electron emitters has been finalized Autoemisní zdroje elektronů významně zlepšily koherenci elektronových trysek v elektronových mikroskopech a v případě zobrazení krystalů tak umožnily dosáhnout rozlišení na atomární úrovni. Avšak i dnes, třicet let od prvního použití autoemisního zdroje elektronů, můžeme jen stěží říci, že vývoj zdrojů elektronů je ukončen
