Problematika půjčování peněz v romských komunitách se dostala do zorného úhlu pohledu etnologů přibližně v polovině 90. let 20. století v souvislosti s tzv. "úžerou", lichvářstvím, či půjčováním peněz na nepřiměřeně vysoký úrok, které se začalo mezi fyzickými osobami do extrémních rozměrů rozmáhat v první polovině 90. let 20. století zejména na Slovensku. The problem of money-lending became a point of interest for ethnologists in the mid-1990s in connection with the so-called "loansharking", usury or moneylending at inadequately high interest, which became extremely abundant among natural persons in the early 1990s, particularly in Slovakia. The high-interest loans occurred within Roma communities.
