However cytostatic polymeric conjugates based on N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide are in clinical trials, we are still far away from understanding the mechanism of their action. Cleavability of the drug from oligopeptidic side-chains of polymeric carriers seems not to be necessary condition for pharmacological activity and those spacers play most probably a very important role in the accumulation of conjugates in tumor cells. Ačkoliv cytostatické polymerní konjugáty na bázi N-(2-hydroxypropyl)metakrylamidu jsou již ve fázi preklinických testů, skutečný mechanismus jejich účinku není ještě zcela objasněn. Zdá se že štěpitelnost postranních peptidických řetězců nesoucích cytostatikum není podmínkou účinnosti těchto konjugátů a tyto řetězce jsou zodpovědné spíše za masivní akumulaci těchto léčiv v nádorových buňkách.
