Original title: The absent description: compensating for its evocative and identifying function
Authors: Hoffmannová, Jana

Abstract: A specific kind of descriptions may be observed in everyday spoken conversations: an explicit description based on full-meaning expressions is missing, while being replaced by other means of reference such as indefinite pronouns or quasi-referring means. This indefiniteness is also made possible due to the use of gestures and moves. Nevertheless, it is the shared experience and communicational strategies of the participants that make it possible for the description to fulfill its function.
Keywords: description; everyday spoken communication; face-to-face dialogues; indefinite and quasi-demonstrative pronouns; shared knowledge
