Czechoslovak Red Citadels between Two Wars
Vrba, Jakub ; Rákosník, Jakub (advisor) ; Spurný, Matěj (referee)
(in English): The thesis focuses on the regional organisation of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ) in the Liberec region. In the political system of interwar Czechoslovakia, KSČ was specific in that its members hailed from all local ethnic groups. It was therefore, above all, the local Germans who formed the major part of the Liberec organisation. In the 1920s in some districts within the region, KSČ received up to one third of all votes cast, while throughout the 1930s, its support diminished rapidly in favour of the Sudetendeutsche Partei (SdP). The thesis seeks to clarify the causes of this sudden drop. It identifies as one of the major factors the mutually contradictory identities which were being formed within the local branch of the movement, i.e. the communist, the German and the Czechoslovak identity. These three came into alignment, to a certain degree, only shortly before the Munich Agreement with the emergence of a communist Czechoslovak narrative established on a supraethnic basis. The study also takes note of the developments in the KSČ headquarters in Prague as these had significant impact on the peripheral Liberec organization and further places the problem within the context of the First Czechoslovak Republic and its society. The policies and politics of the central...
Reference value for handgrip strength and skeletal muscle mass for children aged 4 to 12 years in the Czech republic.
Vrba, Jakub ; Šteffl, Michal (advisor) ; Kinkorová, Ivana (referee)
Title: Reference value for handgrip strength and skeletal muscle mass for children aged 4 to 12 years in the Czech republic. Objectives: The main aim of this study was to create reference values for handgrip strength dependent on body mass index (BMI) and for skeletal muscle index (SMI) among children in the Czech republic. Methods: 442 children participated in this study realized in five different places of the Czech republic. There were used bioelectrical impedance analysis to body composition and isometric handgrip dynamometer to handgrip strength measurements. Results: Reference values of handgrip strength dependent on body mass index (BMI) and skeletal muscle index (SMI) were calculated. Percentile nomograms for both genders separately are provided according to age from 4 to 12. Conclusion: Handgrip strength dependent on BMI as well as SMI increased with age in both genders. Boys showed higher level in both variables, nevertheless, the only in SMI there was a statistically significant difference. Keywords: Handgrip strength, skeletal muscle mass, BMI, SMI
Refugee Camp in Traiskirchen (Austria) between the 1960s and 1980s.
Vrba, Jakub ; Pullmann, Michal (advisor) ; Spurný, Matěj (referee)
(anglicky): This BA thesis is devoted the everyday life in the Austrian refugee camp Traiskirchen from the 1960s to 1980s. In particular, it analyses the reasons which led the refugees to leave their country of origin. It further examines the asylum application procedure and the key strategies the actors employ within it with regard to their expectations and long-term plans. The thesis then explores the conflicts in the camp, their principal backgrounds and their solutions. It also touches on the question of (un)employment. With reference to the theory of Anthony Richmond and the sources from the Traiskirchen camp, the thesis shows that a clear line cannot be drawn between economic and policital migration. In its stead, it is useful for our understanding of this migration to put emphasis on the refugees' "Sinnwelt", their so-to-say symbolic universe, especially the ideas about the West with which they were coming into the new environment, and on the confrontation of these ideas with the practical experience of the camp. The sources reveal that these images of the West, which often stood as a markedly idealized representation of the Western reality, had influenced the very decision to emigrate, and subsequently exacerbated the shock inflicted by the reality of the camp.
