The thesis deals with activating teaching methods and their influence on vocabulary acquisition in the field of English for Medical Purposes. The experimental research explores the extent to which activating teaching methods influence the acquisition of professional vocabulary. For this purpose, a set of activities (didactic games and role-plays) was created and implemented at the beginning of each teaching block for the subject Medical English I and II. The main objective of these activities was the review of word stock from the previous lessons. The review was focused on the form, meaning, and use of words. In the research, both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection were used, including progress tests, credit tests, and questionnaires. Progress tests and credit tests were used to measure whether there was a significant statistical difference regarding the professional vocabulary acquisition between the experimental and control groups. A statistically significant difference was found between the experimental and control groups at the B2 level only. The questionnaires showed that activating teaching methods were positively evaluated by the B1 and B2 participants and were appreciated for their practical benefits (professional vocabulary acquisition, the positive influence on...

The author of this doctoral thesis Theoretical basis of developing and evaluating worksheets for foreign language teaching with a focus on the Spanish language attempts to describe the current situation regarding the creation of worksheets. He highlights the fact that there is no theoretical basis for their production, and no evaluation of the quality and application of these worksheets in the teaching of Spanish. He also outlines ways how to solve this deficit and potential problems in the process of investigation into this topic. The main aim of this dissertation is to analyse the worksheets as a supplementary teaching material and to describe the whole process of their adoption, adaptation, creation, usage, evaluation, revision and actualization. Although the teachers usually complement their usual textbook with autonomous supplementary materials, the lack of methodology or empirical research on this topic is evident. In theoretical part of this doctoral thesis all available sources will be analysed and the emphasis will be put on comparing rules of the textbooks creation to worksheets creation in order to put together relevant information. The similar principles will be highlighted and also differences will be mentioned. Moreover, methods of creating and evaluating worksheets will be...

Bryndová, Marcela ; Králová, Jana (advisor) ; Obdržálková, Vanda (referee) ; Valeš, Miroslav (referee)
IN ENGLISH The doctoral thesis focuses on the analysis of Spanish textbooks, both comparative method and content analysis, and at the same time it contributes to the mapping of the beginning of Spanish language teaching in Bohemia after 1945. Functions of textbooks as a didactical teaching aid are also defined. The author conducted interviews by a unique method of oral history. Based on these interviews with three experts on language teaching, the beginnings of the formation of the Spanish language textbooks in Bohemia have been recorded. From the point of view of psychology and didactics, a teacher is a mediator between the textbook and the user. For this reason the doctoral thesis includes a chapter called Teachers` personality. The author characterizes the role of teachers in the educational process and the influence of his/her personality on the use of textbooks. The description is made on the basis of the interviews with Josef Hendrich, Libuše Prokopová and Vladimír Rejzek. The main part of the doctoral thesis consists of two chapters, a comparison and a content analysis. The comparative analysis describes textbooks with respect to the intention of the authors, it compares publications in terms of structure, target groups, use of pictorial material, etc. The development of linguistic...

Revitalization of the Regional Language in Provence by the Medium of Calandreta Schools Richard Vacula (Abstract) This thesis focuses on the role of bilingual Calandreta schools in the process of maintenance and revitalisation of the regional language in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region, France. It is based on empirical research undertaken in form of questionnaires and directed interviews in the place of two existing Provençal Calandretas, Gap and Orange. A sample of the local population and respondents from the area of the two schools has been included in the research. We have studied linguistic behaviour, attitudes towards regional education, and the picture of the schools and the language in question. The results suggest that the public is inclined towards the essentials of the language being taught, however, less so towards bilingual education. The results also show that the potential of the schools observed lies rather in their pedagogical methods. The strong pressure of French is noticeable even on the grounds of the schools. The use of Occitan in everyday communication situations is then somewhat rare. The regional language is noticeably associated with the school environment and is connected with specific contexts. Hence, it is necessary to rate the influence of the Calandreta schools on the real...
Hledání spojitosti - použití kvantitativní textové analýzy ke zhodnocení vlivu textu na výsledky grantových programů
Valeš, Miroslav ; Bruckner, Tomáš (advisor) ; Ircing, Pavel (referee)
Since software and hardware is well available for automated text analysis and since a large data that describes real projects submitted to grant program is opened up, there is a possibility to follow phenomena of behavioral economics and psycholinguistics which evidence particularities in textual descriptions may be statistically associated with a reader's behavior or with a reader's decision-taking, which, in this case, involves an influence on final allocation of grant funds. The thesis uses forenamed areas as a starting-point and also employs quantitative indicators from the field of forensic linguistics in order to perform a computer-aided quantitative text analysis. The main goal is to evaluate from correlation perspective, if there in real operational programmes were present any associable relationships between the quantitative features of a proposed project's textual description and the amount of grant allocated to a project. The thesis is divided into four chapters, where it introduces basis, describes analyzed data and used methods, comments on made analyses and found relations, and all the performed research is summarized and evaluated in the last chapter.
