Geographical Analysis of the Brewing Industry in Czechia
Pulec, Jan ; Pavlínek, Petr (advisor) ; Slach, Ondřej (referee)
This thesis analyses the Czech brewing industry and its integration in transnational production networks by drawing on the perspective of global production networks (GPNs). It evaluates the geographic structure of the Czech brewing industry, the inflow of foreign direct investment after 1990, and, especially, the integration of Czech breweries into GPNs dominated by foreign transnational corporations. The thesis analyses major changes the Czech brewing industry has experienced during the post-1990 transformation of the Czech economy and presents the current state of the industry from the geographical perspective. The methodological section presents and explains the key processes of concentration and de- concentration. The thesis identifies the four different forms of involvement of Czech breweries in GPNs in the brewing industry. The role of foreign lead firms in the Czech brewing industry is analysed in detail. Role of Knowledge Bases in Regional Innovation Systems
Kadlec, Vojtěch ; Blažek, Jiří (advisor) ; Slach, Ondřej (referee) ; Žítek, Vladimír (referee)
The main goal of this work was to contribute to an understanding of the role of the knowledge bases in regional innovation systems and to identify whether the sizes of the different subsystems of regional innovation systems differ in relation to their economic and innovation maturity, and the structure of the knowledge bases is relevant. Work has also sought to identify factors limiting the more efficient interconnection of the two sub-systems of regional innovation systems and how these negative factors can be overcome. The analyses carried out have shown that economically and innovatively developed regions follow different trajectories in the composition of knowledge bases than less developed regions. More developed regions have more developed analytical knowledge base and less developer regions are more oriented on synthetic knowledge base. The analyses also revealed that regional innovation systems vary in size and internal structure of each subsystem. Advanced regions have a much more developed subsystem of knowledge exploitation, that is the demand side, while less developed and less innovative regions have more developed the supply side, that is, the knowledge generation subsystem. Trust, information exchange and shared strategic vision have proved to be among the key aspects that can...

The role of soft factors in regeneration of old industrial regions: a comparison of Ostrava region, Ruhr area and Saarland
Slach, Ondřej ; Blažek, Jiří (advisor) ; Skokan, Karel (referee) ; Pavlínek, Petr (referee)
Hlavním cílem předložené disertační práce je kritické zhodnocení role a významu měkkých faktorů regionálního rozvoje v procesu regenerace starých průmyslových regionů v komparativní perspektivě. Druhý blok obsahuje případové studie starých průmyslových regionů Porúří a Sárska. V rámci těchto studií, jsou kriticky hodnoceny přístupy k utváření měkkých faktorů regionálního rozvoje, přičemž struktura a obsah těchto studií odráží rozdílné charakteristiky obou regionů.

The Development of Spatial Differentiation of Unemployment in Czechia through the Lens of Evolutionary Geography The diploma thesis aims to analyze the development of spatial differentiation of unemployment on the municipality level in Czechia between the years 2003 and 2016. The theoretical framework is based on the evolutionary approaches in geography which emphasize the role of heredity, continuity and the local specifics in economic and social regional development. Analysis of concentration, ownership structure and integration tendencies of breweries in Czechia
Forman, Martin ; Květoň, Viktor (advisor) ; Slach, Ondřej (referee)
Over the last ten years the phenomenon of opening new microbreweries has reached Czechia. Since 2008 more than 350 new microbreweries have been opened and the map of breweries has recorded significant changes. Regarding these facts the main goals of this thesis were to analyze the brewing industry in Czechia in the context of ownership structure, concentration tendencies and mergers and acquisitions activity. First part focuses on the characteristics of the breweries' geographical layout related to the ownership structure and size based on annual beer production and in context of selected socioeconomic indicators. Following this part is an analysis of decomposition with use of concentration and cluster ratios. This part aims on cluster forming tendencies of brewing companies. The analytical part is completed with mergers and acquisitions characteristics in this industry sector. The basic figures and signs of the geographical decompositions were identified based on selected analytical methods and complex maps. Several concentration zones where breweries tend to cluster were labeled using the cluster analysis. Mergers and acquisitions reveal the difference in integration activity according to the brewery size. Key words: brewing industry, breweries, ownership structure, concentration, cluster, Czechia
