The Influence of the Catholic Anti-Abortion Movement on the Identity of the Republican Party in the 1960s and 1970s

This bachelor's thesis discusses the shift in the Republican Party's position on abortion in the 1970s in the context of Catholic anti-abortion movement. The anti-abortion movement was mobilised due to social upheavals of the 1960s during which the calls for abortion-laws liberalization became more prominent. The pro-life movement in the 1960s and 1970s was almost exclusively Catholic, since evangelicals joined the movement as part of the New Christian Right in the late 1970s. With the use of primary and secondary sources, the thesis analyses the relationship between the Republican Party and the pro-life movement. The thesis seeks to answer the question why the Republican Party included a pro-life stance to its platform. The thesis consists of three chapters. The first one explains the character and activity of the pro- life movement and the positions of the main actors, the Republican Party and the Catholic Church, on the abortion issue up to the legalization of abortion in 1973. The second part analyses Richard Nixon's position on abortion. The last chapter deals with Republican Party's adoption of the pro-life platform in 1976 and focuses on strengthening of the ties between the pro-life movement and the Republican Party. Development of Activities of Chinese Organizations in Vancouver (1896-1923): Case Study of Chinese Benevolent Association

The Chinese are currently the largest Asian national minority in Canada. Tthey make up about thirty percent of the total population of Vancouer. The Chinese have played an important role in the history of British Columbia. The first Chinese arrived on the shores of British Columbia in the first half of the 19th century. A significant increase of new Chinese immigrants comes with the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, which was built primarily thanks to hard work of Chinese workers. After completion of the railroad, a large proportion of immigrants settled in Vancouver, which in the early 20th century became the city with the largest Chinatown in Canada. However, the Chinese encountered resentment from Canadian society, which considered them to be representatives of the inferior race, and part of the white public even demanded their deportation and a total ban on the entry of new Chinese immigrants. However, the Chinese community came together and concentrated in Chinatowns. But, they constantly faced stereotypes from Canadian society. The Causes of the Deterioration of Trade Relations Between the US and China During the Donald J. Trump Administration

1 Abstract The thesis' main focus is Donald J. Trump's administration's trade policy towards People's Republic of China. Since taking office, Trump has been striving to turn the trade policy towards PRC into a more protectionist one. His argument is that China's economic prosperity is acquired through unfair trade practices, which damages the economy of USA. Since the beginning of 2018 up until the end of 2019, Trump imposed high tariffs on numerous Chinese goods and PRC does the same in return. The resulting tit-for-tat policies cause the deterioriation of the two countries' trade relations. The thesis searches for the main causes of Trump's trade policy towards PRC, which is in comparison with the two preceding presidential administratives more aggressive. The thesis' primary hypothesis assumes that the cause lies in the risk that the strengthening China poses on the US hegemonic role in the international order. The thesis confirms this hypothesis on the basis of the theory of relative gains, hegemonic stability and comparative advantage. What type of First Lady Was Michelle Obama: Case Study on Michelle Obama as First Lady

This Master's Thesis analyzes various roles that First Ladies of the United States take upon when their spouses are elected President of the United States. Even though the role of First Ladies is undefined, the public still expects a certain level of manners and dedication to their selected causes. The influence of First Ladies is, on the one hand limited by the fact that they do not have any real policies to follow. On the other hand, the platform of First Ladyship offers a great deal to influence and ability to raise awareness to causes they care about. The main argument is that Mrs. Obama had a particular skill to promote her initiatives and to turn negative attention by the media to the rights directions. Additionally, she was able to get the attention of corporations and state officials to help her make a real impact on her initiatives. Her authenticity and fun engaging style helped her with engaging young people into her campaigns and her status of popular First Lady. Therefore, the goal of this thesis is to find out how the role of First Lady changed during Michelle Obama's term as First Lady and what kind of influence her initiatives brought. U.S. Public Diplomacy in Iraq After 9/11

This Diploma Thesis is a case study that, on the example of Iraq, examines the development and importance of American public diplomacy in the Middle East. The thesis deals with the revitalization of public diplomacy projects and its budget increase, which started to occur as a result of changes in American foreign policy after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Efforts to renew public diplomacy began to appear during the administration of President George Bush. However, it was his successor, Barack Obama, who became a strong supporter of "soft power" in US foreign policy and who stressed the need to restore credibility of the US in the world and cooperation with the Arab world. This thesis also deals with the development of public diplomacy in Iraq in the context of the war in Iraq, the subsequent American occupation and the increase of sectarian violence and violent extremism. Although Iraq has been the largest recipient of financial support for public diplomacy for several years, the biggest limit of public diplomacy in the country is its inadequate security situation. Based on the analysis of exchange programs between the US and Iraq, the thesis aims to prove that public diplomacy is an important tool for establishing a dialogue with foreign publics.
