Kettner, Josef ; Picková, Dana (advisor) ; Stellner, František (referee)
At the end of the 15th century the hitherto cordial relations between LithuaniaPoland and Muscovy that had prevailed in previous decades to ok on a strongly confrontational nature. It is this initial phase of clashes between these two states that I have selected as the theme of my work. In this thesis I have attempted to both outline the mutual relationships of the rulers of these states before, after and main1y during this conflict, as well as their approaches to it. The conflict is placed within the wider regional context, as it was the attitudes of neighbouring states in both eastem and central Europe that had an impact on the outcome of the first Lithuanian-Muscovite War. The work is written in chronological order and split into 5 chapters. The introductory chapter (Lithuania, Poland and the State oj Muscovy over the centuries) is dedicated to the development of the Lithuanian state and the Russian lands from the 12th century to the year 1485. The main focus of attention here are the events that influenced affairs within the two countries and the relationship between them. The next four chapters are the heart of the work. Chapters two and three (the Start ofBorder Clashes 1486-1490 and Unrest in the Shadow ofthe War Jor the Hungarian Throne 1490-1492) describes the mutual relations between Lithuania and...
The Visigothic Kingdom in the Modern Literature
Svoboda, Radovan ; Drška, Václav (advisor) ; Picková, Dana (referee)
The objective of this bachelor thesis "The Visigothic Kingdom in Modern Professional Writing" is to interpret certain substantial aspects of the era of the so-called Kingdom of Toledo. The author has focused on preselected issues such as Visigothic legislation, the nature of king's power, issues of religion, the position of the church, the power of Visigothic aristocracy, living conditions of the Jew minority and the reasons for the downfall of the Kingdom of Toledo. The issues as outlined above have not been preselected at random as they constitute the background against which the key events took place in the Visigothic Kingdom. The author's conclusions are based on the results of scientific research of contemporary, mainly Spanish, but also foreign and Czech historians. Special attention is paid to the historic events towards which the historians differ in view and opinion. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to a deeper knowledge of era that was a major stage in the development of European civilization and introduced many priceless values to its culture, to which, however, Czech historiography has paid too little attention.
Latin West mirrored by the Byzantine historiography (6th-8th centuries)
Bakyta, Ján ; Drška, Václav (advisor) ; Picková, Dana (referee) ; Bednaříková, Jarmila (referee)
The basic aim of the thesis is to investigate whether the Romans of the East (Byzantines) during the 6th to the 8th centuries were interested in the Latin west and the imperial rule over it. In the first part of the work, the various discourses concerning the origins of the Justinianic conquest or reconquest of Africa and Italy articulated in the contemporary sources are identified and evaluated; the only one which cannot be shown or supposed to have been officially articulated is the discourse of a source of Pseudo-Zachariah Scholasticus which makes African and maybe also Italian exulants complaining in the imperial court about the local rulers responsible for the Vandal and Gothic wars. After some other preliminary studies (e.g. concerning the so-called problem of Theodericʼs constitutional position), it is concluded that the emperor Justinian was not interested in an ideologically founded restoration of the empire, but made the western wars because of his contacts with western aristocrats. In the second part of the thesis, the presentation of the Justinianic western wars and western events or realities in the works of the Byzantine historians from Marcellinus Comes and Procopius to Theophylactus Simocatta (the 6th to the early 7th centuries) is investigated and an attempt is made to explore...
The Ostrogoths and the idea of "renovatio of imperii" in the reign of Justinian I
Adamčík, Petr ; Picková, Dana (advisor) ; Suchánek, Drahomír (referee)
The Goths were among the biggest and most important Germanic tribes of the Migration Period. Thanks to their number and combativeness they were able to maintain their unity in two large groups that later formed empires - Visigoth and Ostrogoth. Ostrogoths established themselves as a new large tribe at the time of their sojourn in Pannonia, where they were dominated by the Huns, but because of their advancement and large population they managed to become the co-rulers of the Hun Empire. The second half of the 5th century was decisive for the formation of Ostrogoths' new ethnic territory because Attila's death and the ensuing disintegration of the Hun Empire allowed a single ruler, Thiudimir, succeeded by his son Theodoric the Great, to concentrate control over three Goth groups in his hands. In the 490s Italy was conquered by Ostrogoths, who founded a barbarian kingdom there. The Ostrogothic kingdom became a major political power in the western Mediterranean. Its ruler Theodoric took over the system of govemment and the religious tolerance ofthe defeated Germanic ruler Odoacer. At the end of Theodoric the Greať s rule no power factor in Europe could jeopardize the Gothic Empire surrounded by a system of vassal states. However, Theodoric's successors permitted a disintegration of these links and allowed...
Religious question as a factor of disintegration of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
Laube, Pavel ; Stellner, František (advisor) ; Picková, Dana (referee)
The major purpose of this study is to analyze principles of the multiconfessional society in the early modern Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. I focus mainly on conflicts between elites of the different religion which I analyze through the concept of collective identities. The main target group of the analysis is the highest political elite of the Commonwealth. Through examples of the leading magnates from Lithuania and Ukraine I show the relation between different collective identities, loyalties and political pragmatism in the time of political crisis after the year 1648. My question is, how far different religion influenced formation of the political camps and behaviour of magnates in this age. I conclude that religion was an important factor in forming of the opposition groups and conflicts but one can not see the magnate society strictly devided between confessional groups. The different religion played an important role if it merged with other collective identities such as class, regional or national identity. This was the case of the conflict in Ukraine.
The Visigothic Kingdom in the Modern Literature
Svoboda, Radovan ; Drška, Václav (advisor) ; Picková, Dana (referee)
The main objective of this bachelor thesis "The Visigothic Kingdom in Modern Professional Writing" is to describe major community-related and political aspects of the era of the so-called Kingdom of Toledo. Special attention is paid to the Visigothic legislation, the nature of king's power, issues of religion, the position of the church and the Jew minority in the Kingdom of Toledo. The author did not purport to provide a thorough and detailed description of the history of Visigoths in Hispania in the 6th and 7th centuries; the chronology of the Kings of the Visigoths outlined in the opening chapters is included only to provide a picture for the reader's convenience in navigating through the topics that are analyzed. The author's conclusions are based on the results of scientific research of contemporary, mainly Spanish historians. The sense of this thesis is to contribute to a deeper knowledge of era that was a major stage in the development of European civilization and introduced many priceless values to its culture, to which, however, Czech historiography has paid too little attention.

Attention will be paid to ritual and liturgical practice, sacral symbolism and important political and social manifestations, which reflect important changes in the life of Christianized society at the end of the imperial period, or more precisely, in the first period of spreading of the Germanic tradition. Regnum Baiowariorum. The Frank Empire and Bavarian Duchy in 9th century's narrative resources
Ženka, Oldřich ; Drška, Václav (advisor) ; Picková, Dana (referee)
This work is focused on the period of the faU of the Frank empire in the 9th cen tury and on the role of the tribal duchies, which is demonstrated on the example of Bavaria. The author analyzes the most relevant contemporary narative resources of this period in order to characterize their terminology and conception of the empire. A portrait of Bavaria is icorporated into this wide scheme in an effort to demonstrate its local specificity, its close affinity to the ruling house and other concomitants of this phenomenon. The work also puts down an accent on the rising importance of aristocracy in the empire and in the Bavarian duchy, because this social class had to become the key player in policy of the 10th cen tury in the future German territory.
