Contribution to the Study of the Mesolithic Settlement in Bohemia
Čuláková, Katarína ; Oliva, Martin (advisor) ; Pavlů, Ivan (referee) ; Płonka, Tomáš (referee)
ČULÁKOVÁ, KATARÍNA. Contribution to the Study of the Mesolithic Settlement in Bohemia. Prague: Faculty of Arts, Charles University, 2015, 742 p. (including appendices and plates), PhD. thesis. This thesis wants to present lithic collections. Part of them come from an Eastern Bohemian region and part of them from the Bohemian Forest region. Firstly there is a description of how the collections were obtained. Most of the material comes from a surface survey, a smaller part comes from test pitting. A majority of the collections wasn't previously published and was processed for the purpose of this thesis, part of the information was obtained from published articles. This thesis presents a collection of 25 000 lithic pieces from Eastern Bohemia and 3 500 lithic pieces from the Bohemian Forest. At first there are the most numerous sites described according to their position in the landscape and composition of the lithic collection. Then there is a whole collection characterised according to the used raw material, typology and used technology. This information is incorporated into the wider frame of Central European mesolithics. One of the most interesting features of the collection is the variability of raw materials, which is especially high in the Eastern Bohemian region. From the technological point...
Neolithic and aeneolithic settlement in Hořovice basin with focus on stone intrustry
Stolz, Daniel ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Pavlů, Ivan (referee) ; Zápotocká, Marie (referee)
The study of a Neolithic and Aeneolithic settlement in individual areas forms a substantial part of a complex study of a wide range of related issues regarding the overall settlement location and its history, its density, its relation to natural environment, and its relation to previous and later periods. It can also provide insights into stone industry distribution and the process of communication and contacts between neighbouring and distant regions, mining areas, the size of cultivated areas, etc. Unfortunately, until the 1980s, the study ofNeolithic and Aeneolithic settlements was a rather neglected field in the context of Czech archaeology and even since then iťs stili very rarely used for a complex study of multiple issues. The aim of my thesis is to fulfill this "gap" by suggesting possible solution to the above mentioned problems. The selected settlement area is Hořovice basin. The sources gained from intensive archaeological field work carried out in the 1980s and from a detailed field prospection ofthe whole area belong among the richest collections of data collected for a specific region in the Czech Republic. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the largest salvage excavation in Hořovice area carried out in Žebrák in 2000. 47 features dated into the II and III grade of...
Men and caves in the Neolithic Period
Peša, Vladimír ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Svoboda, Jiří (referee) ; Pavlů, Ivan (referee)
Men and Caves in the Neolithic Period Vladimír Peša ABSTRACT From the beginning of archaeological excavations in the 19th century up to the present day, caves as archaeological sites have most often been interpreted as longer- or shorter-term settlements, hideaways or shelters for herdsmen; other interpretations that are considered for caves are cult functions and shelters for social outcasts. I see the beginnings of these notions of universal functions for caves in two contexts. Up until the second half of the 20th century there was a predominant interest throughout most of Europe in Palaeolithic history, and an interpretive model of Palaeolithic cave settlement was subsequently applied to frequently less distinct or even different find situations dating to post-Mesolithic periods. Secondly, at the close of the 19th century caves in the general consciousness of society (i.e. including archaeological) were mainly thought of as warfare shelters or as cover from inclement weather during agricultural activities away from the settlement. Speculation on the greater importance of cult activities and the symbolism of caves doesn't appear with greater regularity in literature until the 1980s; and yet, the settlement impression of caves persists. Using the Neolithic period as an example, the submitted work attempts...

Neolithic Settlement Agglomerations in Today's Kolín Area
Končelová, Markéta ; Pavlů, Ivan (advisor) ; Podborský, Vladimír (referee) ; Popelka, Miroslav (referee)
Neolitická sídelní aglomerace v prostoru dnešního Kolína - abstrakt Disertační práce Markéta Končelová Kolínsko svou polohou i příhodnými přírodními podmínkami patří ke staré sídelní oblasti České kotliny a řadí se k nejlépe archeologicky poznaným územím u nás. I přes tuto skutečnost poskytl záchranný archeologický výzkum v trase stavby silničního obchvatu Kolína množství nových a v mnohém unikátních stop starších antropogenních aktivit. Neobyčejnou koncentraci zde vytváří půdorysy dlouhých domů neolitického stáří (kultury s keramikou lineární a vypíchanou).

Environment and prehistoric agricultural societies (in Bohemia)

Velim - Skalka. A Bronze Age fortified site. Analysis of the Pottery Assemblage
Šumberová, Radka ; Pavlů, Ivan (advisor) ; Bouzek, Jan (referee) ; Jiráň, Luboš (referee)
Velim is one of the most important sites of the Bronze Age of Central Europe. The longterm investigations of the fortified site produced a large pottery assemblage which can serve as a basis for the study of the transition between the end of the Middle Bronze Age and the beginning of the Late Bronze Age in Central Bohemia. The aim of this study was to define the structure of Velim pottery assemblages recovered during the czech and british investigations of the site and to provide information on the metods used for its assesment and analysis. The basic statistical approaches applied to the analysis produced partial results which can, together with the analysis of further types of material and excavation context, contribute to the interpretation of the charakteristics and chronological position of the site. General results can be summarized as follows: definition of the structure of the pottery assemblage, recognition of trends in some charakteristics from individual find complexis, proposed chronological sequence of features, identification of the spatial variation across the site, and of shifts of functional areas, cultural clasification, analysis of the regional conditions. Keywords Bronze Age - fortified site - pottery - description system - cult
