Annotated Translation of Selected Chapters from "Aufblühen: Wie Zimmerpflanzen uns helfen, gesund zu bleiben" (2020) by Sarah Remsky

This bachelor thesis consists of a translation of an original German text and a commentary. For the purpose of this thesis, two shortened chapters from the book Aufblühen: Wie Zimmerpflanzen uns helfen, gesund zu bleiben by Sarah Remsky were translated from German to Czech. This book delves into the topic of houseplant care and their benefits on health. The commentary is comprised of a pre-translation analysis based on the looping model of Christiane Nord, a proposed translation method, a typology of translation problems and a summary of translation approaches, shifts and changes. Influence of the CoViD-19 pandemic on the teaching of simultaneous interpreting in the academic year 2020/2021

Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, students of Czech universities were not allowed to participate in in-person classes from summer semester 2020 until summer semester 2021. This thesis aims to explore the form of simultaneous interpreting classes in Czech Republic during this lockdown. The theoretical part of this thesis presents briefly the methods of teaching simultaneous interpreting and some exercises used to teach simultaneous interpreting. Furthermore, the thesis describes some studies about remote classes in summer semester 2020. A survey among teachers and students as well as semi-structured interviews with instructors form the main part of this thesis. The research is focused on the acquisition of interpreting strategies and didactic challenges that the teachers faced during the lockdown. Another matter of interest are the advantages and disadvantages of remote teaching of interpreting. The thesis surveys students' opinions on the issue of remote teaching, and the interviews with teachers provide a more detailed analysis of didactic approaches they adopted at this unprecedented time.
Annotated Translation of Selected Articles from Windkanal (3/2010)

This bachelor thesis aims to create an annotated Czech translation of an original German text, not yet translated to Czech. The original text comes from the third issue of the magazine Windkanal: Das Forum für die Blockflöte from the year 2010 by German company Conrad Mollenhauer GmbH and consists of three separate texts, namely the foreword Editorial, the article Schätze barocker Verzierungskunst and the article Han Tol: Mit einen Bein im Graben. The magazine is the only one written in German that specializes on the recorder. Its readers are recorder players, amateurs, enthusiasts and professionals. This thesis includes the translation itself and a commentary. The commentary contains the description of the used translation methods, translation analysis, typology and solution of selected translation problems occurring during the translation, and shifts made during the translation process. Interpreting during the Colonization of North America with a Focus on the Territory of the Present-Day United States of America and Canada

The aim of this diploma thesis is to outline the main characteristics of interpreting as a profession and its development during the colonization of North America with a focus on the territory of the present-day United States of America and Canada. The research uses descriptive method and it is based on previous research in the field of history of interpreting. Additionally, this thesis focuses on these topics: interpreters' background, interpreter-mediated settings, interpreters' working languages, interpreters' role and social position, the perception of quality in interpreting and the difference between the profession in the English and French-speaking colonies. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the most important figures of the history of interpreting and their role during the colonization of North America. The thesis presents the most important aspects of the interpreting profession from the first encounters between Europeans and Native Americans to the end of the 19th century.
Comparing German-Czech translation output of publicly available machine translation engines

This diploma thesis deals with the quality of the output of publicly available machine translation engines: Amazon Translate, Bing Translator, Deep L and Google Translate. The aim of the thesis was to qualitatively compare each machine translation engine and to test their capabilities on several types of texts - expressive, informative and operative. The analysis is carried out on translations of German texts into Czech. The thesis consists of two parts, in the theoretical part we discuss the origin and development of machine translation, its types, the automatic machine translation engines which are the object of our research, and we present a two-stage model for evaluating the quality of translation. In the empirical part, the results of the analysis based on the models of K. Reiß and A. Torrens are presented. These results show that the listed machine translation engines can be ranked from the highest to the lowest level of output quality as follows: Deep L, Google Translate, Bing Translator and Amazon Translate. Furthermore, it also turns out that the error rate correlates with the creativity of the text.
Profile, works and contributions of Sergio Viaggio

The central focus of this master's thesis is to provide an overview of the works of the contemporary Argentinian interpreter, translator and interpreting historian, Sergio Viaggio. The thesis contains his biography, an in-depth analysis of his work and an overview of his articles, studies and books that concern interpreting. In each chapter we analyse his works and provide a concise and comprehensive evaluation and summary. The motivation behind the genesis of this thesis was to offer the works of Sergio Viaggio to Czech researchers, who might find inspiration in his work, but wouldn't be able to look for it because of the language barrier. This is a theoretical thesis, similar to other theses on important figures dedicated to the works of contemporary translation studies scholars. Language Interpretation and Gender

The thesis studies gender inequality in interpreting studies. In specific, gender imbalances in European interpreting institutions such as the Institute of Translatology of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University. At the Institute of Translatology, it investigates the gender ratios among master's and doctoral graduates and the gender ratios in individual language programs from 1989 to the present. Through a survey, it traces the opinions of lecturers and students at the institute regarding gender issues and ascertains their views on the causes and consequences of the high proportion of women in the interpreting studies program.
Annotated translation: Erstes Buch - Die Waffen nieder! by Bertha von Suttner

The aim of this Master Thesis is to present an annotated translation of the first chapter of the novel Die Waffen nieder! (1889) from Bertha von Suttner that is presently functional. The novel was already translated under the title Odzbrojte! (1896). The first part of this Master Thesis contains the Czech translation of the first chapter from the novel itself. The second part, which is a translation commentary, divided into subchapters. The beginning of the translation commentary explains the choice of the original text and presents a detailed translation analysis. The next part of the translation commentary contains information about the strategy of solving translation problems, translation shifts and collaborative translation. Heidi Salaets and her Contribution to the Development of Interpreting Studies

This Master's thesis provides an overview of the work of the contemporary Belgian researcher, teacher and interpreter Heidi Salaets. It focuses on the prominent fields of her research, which is predominantly legal interpreting but also videoconference interpreting and interpreting in healthcare. The thesis introduces research projects the Belgian researcher was involved in as their coordinator or coresearcher. It includes a biography of Heidi Salaets, an overview of her didactic activities and reception of her research in the Czech Republic. The main motivation for this thesis was to introduce this important persona of Belgian interpreting studies to the Czech academic community. This is a theoretical descriptive study that was written as a follow-up to other theses dedicated to famous personalities of the international interpreting studies scene. Where do the interpreting skills come from? A comparison of bilinguals and trained interpreting students in simultaneous interpreting

This diploma thesis compares the performance of bilinguals and of interpreting students in simultaneous interpreting. The compared data are from the experiment, within which we tested 3 bilinguals (without any or with little experience in simultaneous interpreting) and 3 trained students of the interpreting MA study programme. The data were collected in the language combination Czech - German. Part of this thesis are also two questionnaires. When comparing the interpreting performances (in form of transcripts of recordings), following interpreting strategies and factors were put emphasis on: salami technique (and related aspects), finishing sentences, hesitation sounds and interferences. This diploma thesis aims at illustrating the effects of the simultaneous interpreting training. The whole thesis is being run through by the question, whether the skill of simultaneous interpreting is an accompanying effect of bilingualism, or whether (and alternatively to what extent) this skill is derived from interpreting training.
