Czech sign language in translations of Czech written formal text

This thesis addresses the issue of translating formal texts written in Czech into Czech sign language. The first chapter deals with stylistic factors influencing formal Czech written texts and also the sociocultural situation of the Czech deaf community. The second and third chapters characterize translation of sign language translation and various approaches to the process of translating both spoken and sign languages. The research is a comparative analysis of a sample of formal Czech written texts and their sign language translations. The findings are introduced in the conclusive part of the thesis. Cause and effect in written Czech of the Czech Deaf

This thesis focuses on how the cause and the effect are expressed in the written Czech texts of Czech deaf people (i. e. those, who don't have full access to spoken language due to their hearing loss). The first part of the thesis, based on Czech grammar books, presents the meaning of terms cause and effect, or causal and consequential relationships, and it attempts to summarize the language tools, by which are these relationships expressed in Czech. The second part of the thesis is devoted to the analysis of the texts written by Czech deaf people and attempts to compare the linguistic means used in texts of the deaf people with the linguistic means used by the Czech hearing majority. The analysed material consists of 1 310 statements containing expressions of cause and effect, which are excerpted from texts of 167 deaf authors. The analysed material contains both school assignments, which deaf students provided directly for analysis included in this thesis, and the texts included in the corpus DEAF. The description and analysis of the written texts puts emphasis on linguistic means and ways of expressing cause and effect that differ from the commonly used language and on probable origins of these differences, especially on possible interferences from the Czech Sign Language.
The adaptations of literature for children and youth for deaf children

This thesis is concerned with investigation adapted texts from literature for children and youth specifically adapted for deaf children. The aim of the work is to compare the final quality edited version of particular book for children and youth based on critical analysis, to assess whether the adapted texts respect the settled publishing rules and do not harm original version together with they are really more accessible for deaf children's readers. Adapted texts for deaf children are generally criticized and deemed unsuccessfull. This thesis seeks for an objective reflection of these books and their effectiveness and to submit possible proposals for their improvement. The first chapters are focused on editorial practice and the types of treatements that are performed in books for children and youth followed by a description of the arrangements for deaf children. Critical analysis is subjected to literary work Honzíkova cesta by Bohumil Říha adapted by Jana Purová. The critical analysis is founded on comparision between readability index of original version and adapted version, and study of the first chapter according to specialized literature. Hypertext as the Linguistics Concept

The goal of the master's thesis is to capture how the term hypertext is comprehended in Czech linguistics with respect to the broader context of foreign treatises. The attention is paid to the concepts from the area of text linguistics which are related to the phenomenon of hypertext: intertextuality, architextuality, pretext, and the possibility of understanding of hypertext as the highest language level is discussed. Attention is paid to the relationship of the author and the reader in the case of production and reception of hypertexts. Selectively is described hypertextuality in contemporary culture, especially fiction. Furthermore, the work focuses on the history of the use of the concept of hypertext and hypertext integration into the network theory.
On the Presupposition Projection in Czech

On the Presupposition Projection in Czech I understand presupposition as both an implication and a set of requirements which have to be fulfilled by the (passive) context, i.e. a set of realized propositions and logico- semantic relations between them shared by the communicants. The content of presupposition is formed by information which the speaker characterizes as predetermined, i.e. known to the communicants. Presupposition is a semantically narrower notion than implication: every meaning expressed indirectly is implied, but not every implied meaning is presupposed. Contextually bound constituents express a proposition which is included in the active context, i.e. a set of propositions on which the communicants are actively focused. Contextual boundness is a type of presupposition trigger: information included in the active context is a necessary part of the passive context (it doesn't hold true vice versa, of course). Context shared by the communicants can not be incremented by the primary (i.e. directly expressed) proposition of a clause, unless all the presuppositions semantically entailed in the primary proposition are satisfied. Verbs in Czech textbooks for the Deaf

The textbooks for Czech deaf people and textbooks for hearing foreigners is the subject of this thesis. The thesis focuses on the interpretation of verbs in them. The whole issue is framed within the broader framework of methods and procedures used in the education of deaf students. The first part deals with the problems of teaching Czech deaf people from the Czech Republic, especially teaching Czech as a second / foreign language. Attention is paid to methods of teaching foreign languages. The thesis is devoted to verbs in Czech language and Czech sign language, their functional and structural differences. The second part is a compilation of available textbooks of Czech language for deaf students, and textbooks of Czech language for hearing foreigners. It is directed mainly to the interpretation of verbs. The third part offers interviews with teachers from primary schools for the hearing impaired. The interviews are focused on their approach to teaching Czech in general, used textbooks, and the difficulties associated with teaching verbs. Adaptation of Czech Language Leaving Examination for the Deaf in Light Testing Czech Language as a Foreign Language

This diploma work focuses on Adaptation of Czech Language Leaving Examination for the Deaf, which deaf student in Czech republic pass as a part of the their Leaving Examination. As a background of this main theme examines also present situation in the research of reading literacy. In the main part of this work is this examination presented in detail and there are also presented the results of deaf students and some other statisticts information. Examples of test units and student's written works are attached too. The other part of this work describes examinations of Czech language as a foreign language and give some detail information about the most important exams. In conclusion, the author of this work is trying to explore the way how the deaf students language skills in other countries are examined in their Leaving Examination.

Integration of the Vietnamese in the Czech Republic

This thesis deals with the integration of the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic which has its specifics and significantly differs from the integration of other foreigners living in the Czech Republic. The characteristics of the Vietnamese community are for example the high percentage of those who live here on the permanent residence permit, then very low unemployment and at last the majority of the community is doing their own business on the trade licence. The other important part is the issue of the acquisition of knowledge of the Czech language. The theoretical part of the thesis firstly defines the number of Vietnamese living in the Czech Republic, historical development of this community and their characteristics. Then the thesis deals with the term of integration; this term is properly defined and the particular dimensions of integration are described as well. Russian-speaking community in the Czrech Republic

This master thesis explores the process of integration of the group of 5 russian- speakers in the Czech republic. In the first part of the thesis the theoretical terms connected with the integration of foreigners are introduced. The migration policy of state, bias and stereotypes or language aspect of integration is mentioned. The second part of the thesis contains the report of the research. At first chosen methods of language biography and follow- up interview are characterized here. Their analysis and interpretation of particular speakers follows. At the end of the thesis the results are sum up and the integration tendencies of speakers are decribed here.
