Female Footbinding: A Comparison of Attitudes of the Chinese and of the Western Missionaries in China
Chobotská, Eva ; Hudeček, Jiří (advisor) ; Lomová, Olga (referee)
The bachelor thesis evaluates the influences that missionaries and activists, mainly from Great Britain, had on the Chinese anti-footbinding movements. Its particular focus is on the works of writer and activist Alicia Little, and missionaries Timothy Richard and John MacGowan, comparing their positions and arguments with the writings of Chinese reformers and activists Liang Qichao and Kang Youwei. The purpose of the thesis is to highlight, based on contemporary sources, that Western criticism was primarily and mostly voiced by women who sought to improve conditions for their Chinese counterparts, while Chinese criticism was formulated by men as part of reforms and efforts to modernize China.

Victor Segalen's Chinese "exoticism"
Marková, Josefína ; Lomová, Olga (advisor) ; Chaloupková, Lenka (referee)
The bachelor 's thesis will focus on the relationship to "exotic" China in the work of Victor Segalen. It is based on his own reflections on exoticism, as these reflections are formulated in his Essay on Exoticism (1978), as well as on his poetry collection Steles (1912) and his novel René Leys (1922), works of art inspired by Segalen's encounter with Chinese culture, as concrete examples of the realization of Segalen's aesthetic program. My own analysis will be confronted with the opinions of chinese literary scholars, especially in the perspective of the sympathy for Segalen's interest in Chinese culture on the one hand and the critique of Eurocentrism and orientalistic clichés on the other.
Modern Chinese Woman Traveling the World: Lü Bicheng (1926-1933)
Záhumenská, Markéta ; Lomová, Olga (advisor) ; Hudeček, Jiří (referee)
The subject of this thesis is an analysis of the Chinese poet and journalist Lü Bicheng's (1883-1943) travel notes from her journey around the world, originally published in periodicals and recently published in the book Ou Mei manyou lu (Wanderings in Europe and America). The author is first introduced through secondary literature, and her life is set in broader contemporary social and historical context. The introductory chapters, providing the historical context necessary for analysis, focus on the position of women in society at the beginning of modernization according to European models, the development of women's education, travel, women's literature, and the development of journalism at the time. Against this background, an ideological and thematic analysis is conducted to answer the following questions. How did Lü Bicheng portray the places she visited? In what ways did her background and literary interests inform her description? In what ways did she travel and with whom did she meet? What obstacles did she face as a foreigner and as a woman traveling alone? And more. The thesis then includes translations of excerpts from the works analyzed, a reconstruction of the itinerary of the journey, pictorial appendices, and a summary of Lü Bicheng's articles used in the analysis, including the...
Rectification campaign as part of Leninist party building in PRC past and present
Lipold, Tobiáš ; Lomová, Olga (advisor) ; Hudeček, Jiří (referee)
Since its establishment in Yan'an in 1942, the rectification of the work style has been an important tool of the Communist Party of China to consolidate its own unity and enforce Party discipline. The corrective campaign, based on the compulsory study of ideological texts and self-reflection by those involved, first enabled Mao Zedong to carve out an unshakable position as party leader and subsequently served as a model for other campaigns designed to maintain party unity and consolidate the power of the CCP in the newly established People's Republic of China. The importance of the rectification of the work style has risen again since the beginning of the rule of General Secretary Xi Jinping, who is using it to strengthen his own power as part of the restoration of the Leninist character of the Party. This thesis examines the rectification of the work style in three time periods in the development of the CCP of China. The first part of the thesis establishes the basic principles of the rectification formed by Mao Zedong in the Yan'an period, and the second part analyzes its use in the early years of the PRC. The last part of the thesis examines the use of the rectification under Xi Jinping, comparing it with previous developments.
Southeast Asian Migrant Literature and its Position in Taiwanese Literary Field
Ryzhova, Olena ; Dluhošová, Táňa (advisor) ; Lomová, Olga (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to present migrant literature in the context of contemporary Taiwanese literature on a discursive level. The thesis will look at migrant literature through the lenses of three theoretical approaches that are traditionally applied to Taiwanese literature: postcolonial studies, Sinophone studies and world literature studies. To illustrate how each approach can be applied to migrant literature, a short analysis of several short stories by migrant authors will be presented. The aim of this analysis is to demonstrate whether the chosen approach can effectively incorporate migrant literature and serve as a basis for understanding and conceptualizing these works. By creating three binary oppositions with migrant literature, the thesis also highlights the limitations of existing definitions of Taiwanese literature as defined by the social majority. The thesis concludes with definition of migrant literature through the lenses of each theoretical framework.
The Plant Imagery in ci of Li Qingzhao
Pitráková, Helena ; Masárová, Šárka (advisor) ; Lomová, Olga (referee)
The thesis examines plant motifs with a main focus on the plum, lotus, osmanthus and chrysanthemum in the ci poetry of Li Qingzhao, a poetess of the Song dynasty. The individual chapters situate the author in the contemporary context, define the poetic genre of ci songs in general and briefly mention the genre of yongwu, and focus on the explanation and symbolism of the chosen plants in the Chinese literary and cultural context. The analysis of the selected songs focuses on the plant motifs reflecting the poet's personal life and its interpretation. Whether they replicate it, become Li's expression of herself, are personified, or are classifiable in the genre of yongwu. The thesis also seeks to map the most prominent floral motifs and their uses. Each chapter of the analysis discusses individual plants and their motivic significance. In the analysis of the plant motifs of the songs, the occurrence of references to Qu Yuan or to Tao Yuanming's chrysanthemum motif is also marginally charted. The thesis concludes with a summary of how the various plant motifs are used in Li Qingzhao's songs, in which time periods they are most common, and whether their use varies significantly. Key words: Li Qingzhao 李清照, plants 植物, ci poems 詞, plum tree 梅, lotus 蓮, osmanthus 桂, chrysanthemum 菊, Song dynasty 宋朝

Chinese Radio Drama and its Ideological Dimension
Križan, Jan ; Hudeček, Jiří (advisor) ; Lomová, Olga (referee)
This thesis aims to introduce the Chinese radio play (guangboju 广播剧) as an understudied genre in the West, which nevertheless deserves attention, especially because of its substantial ideological aspect. This genre has undergone tumultuous developments in the last thirty years, mainly due to the transition of the Chinese economy to a market economy. In response, radio plays have fragmented into two main branches - commercial plays, which are to this day still struggling to survive in the environment of the market economy, and ideological plays, which are an expedient product of the Chinese government's propaganda. These plays, which are the focal point of this thesis, are produced mainly for the purpose of participation in national-level government competitions, in particular the Project 5+1 (Wu ge yi gongcheng 五个一工程) competition, where their ideological merit is appraised. In order to introduce plays of this nature, the thesis analyses radio plays broadcast in 2021 on the leading state-owned radio station Voice of China (Zhongguo zhi sheng 中国之声) featuring poverty alleviation themes (fupin 扶贫), which has been one of the dominant themes of thematic radio plays since 2015, when the China-wide "Targeted Poverty Alleviation" (Jingzhun fupin 精准扶贫) campaign was officially launched. In addition to this...
Underprivileged Chinese woman in late Qing and early Republican period
Kutílková, Klára ; Lomová, Olga (advisor) ; Hudeček, Jiří (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on how the lives of women of the underprivileged social class transformed during the fall of the empire and after the accession of the Republic of China and its modernization endeavors. The main source is the "autobiography" of old Mrs. Ning, which was recorded by the American missionary Ida Pruitt. Based on this source, it presents the way of life of a "traditional" woman in Beijing, her job, the values she professes, her view of the world, including meetings with various employers, and also her view of the emancipation of younger women. These facts are set in the historical context (the role of women in traditional society, in that period of time contemporary social changes in the perspective of the status of women) and especially in the context of the discourse of the May Fourth Movement. In addition to secondary literature, this part of the thesis also takes into account Lu Xun's short story New Year's Sacrifice (Zhufu 祝福). The thesis also includes a presentation of the author of the analyzed autobiography, the circumstances of the origin of her work and reflections on the authenticity of this unique source. Key words: Gender issues in Traditional China, Ida Pruitt, working women, Women's emancipation, May Fourth Movement, missionaries in China
