The History of Translating "Batrachomyomachia" into Czech

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to analyze and compare the translations of the Batrachomyomachia from the National Revival period to the present. The translations in question are those of Samuel Rožnay (1834 [written 1819]), Hynek Mejsnar (1877 and 1881), Antonín Škoda (1891), Jaromír Rašín (1928), Jan Křesadlo (1998 [1940s]), and Otakar Smrčka (1959). The translations by Jan Hollý (1808) and Dominik František Kynský (1817), that have not survived, are also briefly discussed. The main focus is placed on the analysis of the individual translations. The bachelor thesis provides the basic characteristics of the Batrachomyomachia, information about its uncertain authorship and time of the written. Later imitations of the Batrachomyomachia are also briefly mentioned. Two probes are chosen for a more detailed comparison: the translation of proper names of frogs and mice and the translations of participles.

LITERARY ANALYSIS IN THE LATIN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION Literární text ve výuce latiny - PhD Thesis - Mgr. Bořivoj Marek Abstract The secondary teachers of Latin, both Czech and foreign, focus on the language instruction, which they provide with discussions of Roman history and culture to make the lessons more interesting and varied, as far as the limited number of classes permits. The literature instruction, however, and literary analysis, which could achieve the purpose just as well, are mostly omitted, since there has long been a serious lack of theoretical and methodological guides to the didactics and secondary instruction of Roman literature. The aims and objectives of this thesis are manifold. First, the importance of Roman literature is outlined. Then, relevant curricular documents are examined and aims of the Latin literature instruction are defined. Next, the skills needed for comprehending the Latin text are described and methods of selecting a suitable reading material are considered. Finally, an original curriculum of Roman literature instruction is proposed, offering multiple detailed suggestions of how to work with a literary Latin text of various difficulty levels and composed in all the main genres of Roman literature.
Ivan Bureš as a translator of Roman poetry

The bachelor thesis deals with the translations of Ivan Bureš (1886-1947) from Roman poetry. It places Bureš's work in context of the contemporary translating from Latin into Czech and presents his own reflection as a translator. Based on the analysis of Bureš's translations, it analyzes his translation method, especially in relation to contemporary criticism and his own theoretical principles. The thesis focuses on the development of Bureš's translation method by both comparison of different editions of the same work and comparison of the procedures used in the translations of different works. The results of the analyzes are confronted with the generally widespread opinion, given in literary dictionaries, that Bureš revised his method of translation after the criticism and came closer to the conservative tradition.
Religious aspects of the Virgil cult in late antiquity

The thesis addresses, from the point of view of literary history and from the religionistic point of view, the so called Virgil cult, which had developed around the poet's work, but gradually outgrew the borders of literature and culture as such and, in late Antiquity, became a religious phenomenon in the first place. The first part of the thesis deals with Virgil's position in the education system of Rome, which was essential in him becoming the first among Roman poets. The second part focuses on the Virgil cult in traditional "pagan" literature, in which Virgil becomes a cultural icon. The last part deals with the effort of Christian authors to "christianize" Virgil through Christian interpretation of his work.
Centones Christiani. Intertextual transformations of one form of the Latin Christian poetry of late antiquity

Úkolem této práce bylo analyzovat, popsat a interpretovat cento, pozdněantickou formu "citátové poezie", pomocí takové metody, která by byla schopna vzít v potaz jeho zvláštní charakter. K tomuto účelu jsme se inspirovali analytickými přístupy k textu, které byly navrženy na sklonku 20. století s cílem uchopit různé fenomény závislosti a sekundarity v literatuře, a které vycházejí z teorie intertextuality. Úvodní Teoretická část, nazvaná "Hledání metody popisu", ve své první kapitole shrnuje vývoj proměnlivých názorú na centony a dělí je do tří období. První z nich, od pozdní antiky po baroko, se vymezuje tím, že cento patřilo k produktivním formám v dobové literární tvorbě, byť někdy na jejím okraji. Hodnocení centonu se je v souladu s tím převážně kladné (Ausonius, Isidor ze Sevilly, humanistické příručky, Caramuel z Lobkovic), zdůrazňuje se zejména jejich hravá a reinterpretační, případně parodická stránka. Nečetné kritiky (Tertullianus, Hieronymus, Decretum Gelasianum) vycházejí z ortodoxních křesťanských pozic a kritizují spíše nevhodnost spojení biblického obsahu s "pohanskou'' slovní formou než princip centonu jako takový. V dalším období, které začíná v druhé polovině 18. století, vychází převažující záporné hodnocení centonové poezie ze změny v pojetí umělecké tvorby, pro niž podle dobových...
Interpretation of notions ira and furor in Seneca's tragedy Hercules furens based on the stoic afectology

Mým hlavním úkolem bylo nalézt podíl afektů zra a furor na výstavbě dramatu HERCULES FURENS A THYESTES. Abych však mohla takovou otázku zodpovědět a dostát požadavku, vyjít ze stoické afektologie, nemohla jsem opomenout ani seznámení se základními tématy stoické filozofie (ačkoli jsem je již příliš neproblematizovala, neboť to by vydalo na mnohem rozsáhlejší práci), která se nějakým způsobem vztahují k pojetí afektů u stoiků vůbec a současně ke zkoumané tragédii, ani nastínění Senekova teoretického konceptu hněvu ve spise DE IRA, což bylo v zadání také požadováno. Morální listy Luciliovi mi pak byly významnou oporou, ačkoli jsem je již nezpracovávala systematicky, ale spíš mi posloužily k hojným odkazům během textu. Ovšem básnické dílo nelze interpretovat ani bez seznámení s funkcí formálních a rétorických prostředků, ani bez poukazu na jeho účel, který je v Senekově případě pedagogický. Proto jsem považovala za příhodné, věnovat i těmto aspektům autorova díla náležitou pozornost a zabývat se krátce také historickými okolnostmi jeho života, které jsou beze sporu pro jeho dílo významné. To vše jsou podle mě nezbytné komponenty smyslu celé tragédie HERCULES FURENS. Jelikož jsem však po napsání části zabývající se již zmíněnými tématy a po sepsání průběžné analýzy dramatu zjistila, že zpracování tragédie...
The influence of the antiquity on the oldest French poetry

The dissertation focuses on comparison of medieval writings presenting the actions of Julius Caesar to French readers, specifically Li Fet des Romans, Roman de Jules César and Li Hystore de Iulius Caesar. Interpretation of accessible texts is based on analysis of the translation process: comparison of the antique original and its medieval variants in French language as presented in medieval manuscripts. The author opens the dissertation with introduction to factors influencing the medieval translator; among others the ability of complex understanding of the original text, education and awareness of other literary works, oral component of culture; and the way of thinking and of interpretation of the world.
'Pindarus Christianus?': the hymnic production of Prudentius

In this thesis I focused on the comparison of Prudentius to Pindaros, which has been mentioned in literature since the 16th century. I based my theory of a 'Pindaric Hymn' on several comparisons, specifically on expressive features of Pindars' poetic language, which I've found in the work of Prudentius. I've also found a possible intermediary, Horatius, whose work also includes several features of 'Pindaric Hymn', moreover there were specific references to Pindar and his poems and on the other hand, I've found evident traces of Horace in Prudentius. I came to conclusion, that despite of all similarities, Prudentius didn't know Pindars' work directly.
Valerius Maximus and Exemplum

Valerius Maximus' exempla collection, Facta et dicta memorabilia, has for a long time stayed out of focus of modern literary science. Viewed rather as a practical handbook for orators, it had earned criticism for its allegedly low literary value, especially in the first half of the 20th century. Although this view was later revised at least to some extent, and Valerius was admitted to have literary ambitions in so far that his work was characterized as an original literary achievement of an author who in his collection presented a summary of moral values and standards of his time, the interest in his work has stayed rather fragmented, with researchers preferring to analyze only its specific aspects (such as ethics, religion, historical reflection, etc.). This thesis aims for a comprehensive view of Valerius' collection as a whole against the analysis of theoretical interpretation of exemplum as preserved within the Roman theoretical rhetorical writings. The interpretation is performed by the analysis of the whole, examining the way the entire collection is arranged, through the description of the structure and division of individual chapters, down to the level of the core structural unit, the exemplum. The Saturnian verse

The first part is the summary of recent research which includes the summary of basic problems concerning the Saturnian verse and attempts at their solution. It discusses the issue of the interpretation of antique messages, preserved primary materials and the origin of the Saturnian. At length it deals with the metric structure of the Saturnian - systematically summarizes the existing theories (quantitative, accentual and other notions - isosyllabic, syncretic, and others) and tries to comprehend its principals and shortcomings. The following part focuses on the Czech verse, its principals and especially the problems with translating quantitative hexameter into the Czech language. It addresses the Czech quantitative, accentual and mixed, syllabic hexameter. The key part is a schematic analysis of individual literary Saturnian verses; verses from eposes Odusia by Livius Andronicus and Bellum Poenicum by Gnaeus Naevius, "exemplary Saturnian verse" Malum dabunt Metelli Naevio poetae and Naevius' epitaph. The analysis of the each verse consists of quantitative and accentual schemes and resulting metric scheme. The research is based firstly on the presumption that Livius Andronicus (during the translation of Odyssey into Latin) could have attempted to retain the rhythmic scheme of the original (Greek hexameter)...
