Concept of hearts and minds: analysis of factors influencing its success
Janoš, Ondřej ; Doboš, Bohumil (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
Heart and Minds concept is one of the most overlooked approaches of the counterinsurgency. This is surprising especially because the classic coercive strategies are struggling with producing sufficient outcomes. In fact it is quite the opposite in practice and they fail to supress the insurgency ultimately. Hearts and Minds strategy is based on assumption that if the government is able to gain public support the insurgents will lose vital resource for their fight and they will collapse eventually. In this thesis I am going to explore the potential the Hearts and Minds strategy has and demonstrate its strengths and weaknesses. There are five cases of insurgency to be examined in which the Hearts and Minds has been used successfully or unsuccessfully. The first case is the Emergency in British Malaya. Gerard Templer is considered as an author of the Hearts and Minds phrase, therefore his administration of Malaya should be examined I believe. Second case is the FARC insurgency in Colombia. Third case is the Zapatistas movement in Mexico. Fourth case is the US invasion into Iraq in 2003. Last case is the 2012 Tuaregs uprising in Mali and subsequent development. It is clear from the findings that Hearts and minds has its place among the COIN approaches. Even though it is not best suited for all...
What could de Gaulle teach Qatar? Comparative analysis of a struggle for greater intra-alliance autonomy

1 Univerzita Karlova Fakulta sociálních věd Institut politologických studií Diploma thesis project What could De Gaulle teach Qatar? A comparative analysis of the struggle for greater autonomy in Intra-Alliances Name: Khalid Almesfair Academic advisor: JUDr. PhDr. Tomáš Karásek, Ph.D. Study program: International Security Studies Year of project submission: 2020 2 The Problem Long before the Qatar crisis in 2017, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has experienced tense competition within member states for greater intra-alliance autonomy. In this regard, "Qatar appears almost to enjoy annoying the United States and provoking the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) while pursuing a conciliatory policy towards Iran to maximize autonomy" (Hinderson, 2014). Doha's behavior to act beyond the GCC security strategy has largely contradicted the principles and conditions under which the GCC was founded upon, most notably the Iranian threat following Ayatollah Khamenei's revolution in 1979 (Legrenzi, 2011). By doing that, Qatar partially denied its alliance commitments, undermining regional security and strategic interests of its Gulf counterparts but also the GCC's unity while maintaining membership hitherto. In fact, the soft power that Qatar has utilized cannot be neglected. For...
University education of foreigners in the Czech Republic
Panfilova, Kaselina ; Rychtaříková, Jitka (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
1 University education of foreigners in the Czech Republic Abstract The thesis examines evolution, trends and structures of foreigners in tertiary education sector in the Czech Republic and at the same time aims at finding common aspects or differences between students with Czech citizenship and without it. In the theoretical part of examining university education for foreigners the concept of third demographic transition has been applied. The Associated Student Register Information (SIMS) has been used as the main data source. In this thesis, the analysis is based on individual anonymized data of graduates in the period between 2001 and 2017. The analysis focuses on net duration of study with such independent variables as gender, age, study field, form of study, type of university and citizenship. The analytical part also examines the relationship between gender and its possible dependence on citizenship, study field and on the net duration of study. One of the conclusions of this work is that the number of Czech students has been progressively decreasing in the last few years, while the number of foreign students in the Czech Republic is growing. Still, the net duration of study is shorter for Czech graduates than for foreigners, with an exception of Slovak students with a shorter net duration of study...
Swedish model of family policy as an inspiration for Czechia
Lenz, Patrik ; Kocourková, Jiřina (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
Swedish model of family policy as an inspiration for Czechia Abstract The aim of this diploma thesis is to compare the development and current setting of Swedish and Czech family policy. The reason for the comparison of the state systems in the area of family support is the potential inspiration in the measures or direction of Swedish family policy in Czechia. Like the Czech model, the Swedish model of family policy is based on financial compensation for families. In addition, it provides government services (e.g. an extensive network of quality childcare centers) and the conceptuality in which Czech family policy lags. Demographic indicators examine the fertility of women in selected states in the context of family policy development. Selected indicators of female fertility show the influence of family policy in Czechia and Sweden. Besides other things the thesis deals with attitudes and opinions of inhabitants within the family values. These views were analysed based on the respondents' answers in the longitudinal research The European Values Study (EVS). Following the example of Sweden, support for the harmonization of maternity and working life or the involvement of fathers in childcare should be initially increased. Derivatives of Amaryllidaceae alkaloids as potential drugs in the treatment of tumor diseases
Valachová, Iva ; Hulcová, Daniela (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
Charles University Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Pharmacognosy Candidate: Iva Valachová Supervisor: Pharm.Dr. Daniela Hulcová, Ph.D. Title of diploma thesis: Derivatives of Amaryllidaceae alkaloids as potential drugs in the treatment of tumor diseases Twelve aromatic derivatives were prepared. The substitutions were performed on the hydroxyl group at C-3. This was acylated with differently substituted benzoyl chlorides affording the corresponding esters. Structural identification was performed by 1D- and 2D- NMR, ESI-HRMS spectroscopic techniques and optical rotation measurement. The yield of all reactions was more than 60 %. After converting these derivatives to hydrochlorides, their biological activity was tested. The Amaryllidaceae alkaloid vittaine itself exhibits cytotoxic activity and therefore its derivatives have been investigated in this respect. It has been tested against 9 cancerous and 1 non-cancerous cell lines. 3-O-(4-Chloro-3-nitrobenzoyl)vittatine showed the highest cytotoxic activity, unfortunatelly, it does not selectively affect only cancerous cells. Conversely, 3-O-(2-naphthoyl)vittatine has a selective effect on the HT-29 cancerous cell line (colorectal carcinoma) with a viability value of 32 ± 3 %, potentially being the subject of further studies of cytotoxicity...
Monetary Policy Under Behavioral Expectations: An Empirical Validation of the Heuristic Switching Model
Bolshakov, Sergey ; Kukačka, Jiří (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
This work takes one of the most prominent behavioral New-Keynesian models from the shelf and estimates it via the simulated method of moments. The model exhibits a remarkably good ft to the auto- and cross-covariance pro- fles of the euro area macroeconomic time series, especially compared to the standard rational expectations model. This result corroborates the claim that central banks which implement strict infation targeting are better of reacting to the output gap, on top of infation.
