The Role of Religious Leaders in Conflict Transformation
Bodenbender, Stanislava ; Maslowski, Nicolas (advisor) ; Kratochvíl, Petr (referee)
Religion has often been viewed as a source of conflict and violence in international relations. Yet history provides that religion has also been a source and inspiration for peace building and non-violent resistance. The role of religious leaders in conflict transformation has been treated as a marginal phenomenon. Appleby (2000) points out that identifying and documenting the roles of religious actors in resolving protracted conflicts remains an unfinished task. This thesis is an attempt to meet such challenge by focusing on religious leaders and their role in search of solutions in deeply rooted conflicts. Working from the premise that religious leaders can make a substantial contribution in conflict transformation, the overarching goal of this thesis is to examine what roles religious actors play and how equipped they are to serve their communities in their capacity as peacemakers.
Holy See and its involvement in international relations
Pospíšilová, Jana ; Kratochvíl, Petr (advisor) ; Doležal, Tomáš (referee)
The thesis is devoted to a special actor of international relations - the Holy See, Roman Catholic Church representation. It analyzes its behaviour mainly in the issue of recognition of the new state with the majority use of an official discourse of its diplomatic delegates. Specifically, Holy See's position towards criteria for recognition of the new state, which are recommended for state actors, is observed through its rhetoric. Similarities and differences with the state actor are also scrutinized through comparison with a typical behaviour of small states in foreign policy. Case study of the analysis focuses on the question of Palestine and its worldwide recognition as a state, as this topic has possessed a significant role in foreign policy for long time.
Theory of European Disintegration
Olšiak, Matúš ; Kratochvíl, Petr (advisor) ; Rolenc, Jan Martin (referee)
Although the theoretical literature on the issue of European integration is extremely rich, the opposite phenomenon - disintegration - has so far escaped the attention of scholars. In the light of the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression, further ignorance of this phenomenon would be a mistake. The aim of this thesis is to analyze influential theories of European integration in order to determine whether they are able to grasp and explain the hypothetical disintegration of the European Union. Such an analysis can also provide us with the corner-stone for the creation of a coherent theory of European disintegration. In its course, the thesis focuses on the phenomenon of nationalism as one of the most frequently mentioned hypothetical causes of European disintegration.
Přímé zahraniční investice vs. rozvojová pomoc jako nástroj zahraniční politiky: čínská politika v Africe
Květová, Lenka ; Kratochvíl, Petr (advisor) ; Knotková, Vladimíra (referee)
This thesis examines Chinese foreign direct investments in Sub-Saharan Africa and their influence on Chinese foreign policy on the continent between the years 2004 and 2010. It is often believed that oil and raw materials are the principal determinants of Chinese investments in Africa. However, this research suggests that even though there exists strong correlation between the existence of reserves of raw materials and FDI distribution, such motivation is not the only one. Pragmatism, manifested by the Chinese government in FDI allocation, can lead the People's Republic to invest in controversial countries with bad governance like Sudan. China is then forced to keep closer relations with such countries and thus promote their stability to protect its investments. Tools of such efforts include foreign policy, closer cooperation on multilateral level, which includes establishment of Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, and foreign aid.
Czech Foreign Policy and Feminist Theories of International Relations: Comparative Analysis
Brouková, Jana ; Kratochvíl, Petr (advisor) ; Rolenc, Jan Martin (referee)
Feminist theories of international relations traditionally criticize realism as a representative of masculine values in the international relations. According to the feministic premises, the Czech foreign policy should be highly masculinises in the way of realistic discourse because of very low representation of women in foreign policy processes in the Czech Republic. The aim of this thesis is to analyse feminisation and masculinisation of the Czech foreign policy in cases of three events -- the terroristic attacks from September 11, 2001, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. This thesis points out the plurality of masculine and feminine values. From that reason it is not possible to adapt feminist critic of realism to the Czech foreign policy. The masculine values of the Czech foreign policy are determined more by the liberal constructivism.
