Magdalena Straková ABSTRACT The thesis Beginnings of Czech Private Universities, based on the case study of the University of Finance and Administration, addresses the period from 1999 until 2009 when an amendment of the Higher Education Act enabled the creation of the first private universities. It maps and structures the field from the perspective of oral history in a case study of one of the first private universities. The thesis divides the school's history into three parts: preparation of the project and creation of the school, the period of growth, and the time of emergence of the first quality and reputation issues. It also answers the question of how much the existence of private universities changed the sector of tertiary education. Going West: Czech Immigration to California (1960-1970)
West, Anna ; Wohlmuth Markupová, Jana (advisor) ; Krátká, Lenka (referee)
The construction of human identity involves various aspects of self-definition, often involving an interplay between ethnic, national, and personal identities. In the case of emigrants, their self-concepts about their identities can undergo a profound transformation when they leave their home country. This oral history research project studies the experiences of emigration, arrival, integration, and identity among Czech immigrants in California who emigrated from Czechoslovakia in the 1960s. While contemporary research has centered primarily on Czechs in New York, Illinois, Nebraska, and Texas, where large Czech communities have historically existed, this study intends to fill a gap in our knowledge about Czechs who settled in California, of which less is known. Through oral history interviews with five narrators, this study examines their decisions to emigrate; their experiences of arrival and integration in California; their participation in the Czech community in California; and their perspectives on their identities before and after the fall of communism in Czechoslovakia in 1989. The presence of transnational identities and behaviors was found among the narrators, whereby they existed in social worlds that spanned their home country, Czechoslovakia (and the Czech Republic after 1993), and...
The beginning of the end of shoe production in Zlín The transformation of the shoe manufacturer SVIT Gottwaldov in the period 1989-1991
Grác, David ; Krátká, Lenka (advisor) ; Wohlmuth Markupová, Jana (referee)
In my diploma thesis, I examine the contemporary history of the transformation of the socialist economy after November 1989, applying the oral-historical method. As an example of such a transformation, I am using the traditional shoe producer Svit Gottwaldov. The thesis focuses on a specific time frame that began with the Velvet Revolution in 1989 and ended on 26. 11. 1991, when the state enterprise Svit - the former direct successor of the Bata company - halted production, put one-quarter of its employees on forced leave, fell into secondary insolvency, terminated the negotiations on the entry of the Bata company, and essentially collapsed. In the first part of the work, the methodology on which the text is based is laid out. The basis is oral history interviews, which are supplemented by archival sources. The second, empirical part, describes the events of that time in the form of a story. The plot of our story begins with a description of the state of affairs before November 1989, the subsequent revolutionary events, the return of Tomáš Bata junior, his negotiations to take over Svit. The story ends with the management's not very successful attempt at transformation and privatization.
The Development of Modern Accountant 1989-2004
Emanovská, Michaela ; Krátká, Lenka (advisor) ; Hlaváček, Jiří (referee)
This thesis deals with the accounting profession and its development between 1989 and 2004. The year 1989 is set with consideration of the change in the economic system of the former Czechoslovakia, which occurred as a result of the post-November events. The year 2004 follows the entry of the Czech Republic into the European Union. I thus trace thedevelopment of the accounting profession against the background of the transformation of the economic system, the development of computer technology and the adoption of new laws and accounting standards. I have used several different types of sources for this thesis, including period manuals, accounting and tax journals, archival sources, as well assources obtained through the oral history method. These form the main basis for the empirical part of the thesis, which deals with the business environment in the 1990s which created the conditions for the development of the accounting profession; the adoption further of new laws and the way how accountants became familiar with these regulations, including the relationship between accountants and the Tax Office, and also with special emphasis on the Accountants Union as an institution that not only educates accountants but also represents the accounting profession; the impact that the development of computer...
A missed chance? Freedom and the 1990s in the actor's reflection of Czech men
Pražská, Michaela ; Hlaváček, Jiří (advisor) ; Krátká, Lenka (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the topic of the newly acquired freedom in Czechoslovakia after the "Velvet Revolution" in 1989 in reflection of the men from the Czech regions. Attention is drawn to meaning and use of the freedom in the context of an individual who did not participate in political negotiations, but lived and experienced the times as an ordinary citizen. Therefore the work is based on the definition of a sociological term called Thomas theorem and focuses on perceiving of the newly acquired freedom as a new opportunity, primarily in the economic field. Keywords: freedom, business, economic transformation, Thomas theorem, oral history
