Beladová, Michaela ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Kartous, Bohumil (referee)
The diploma thesis "Quality TV" explained, exemplified by Czech television program "Q" explains the term quality television. Firstly, it describes its development, criteria and use. The following part of this paper describes the program "Q" itself, which is dedicated to the queer minority and is being broadcasted by Czech television. The program has been analyzed using a semiotic analysis of television. The animated open (theme) of the program has been studied thoroughly; I also tried to find commonalities for other parts appearing frequently in episodes. A closer approach has been given to three chosen parts as the representatives of the program - two reports and one interview - which should make the structure and the coverage of the program easier to understand. The first report talks about the idea of pregnant men, the second part is an interview of the editor-in-chief of the British lifestyle magazine for men, Attitude, and the third (a report) covers transsexual people and the possibility of surgery in order to change their sex. A detailed analysis focuses on all three parts of the program: the visual, auditive and textual part. Based on the results of this analysis, some 12 criteria of quality, which were defined by Robert J. Thompson (researcher of American TV shows from the 1980's) were applied. The...

Critical media pedagogy - theoretical underpinnigs and contribution to media education Dissertation Mgr. Petr Valenta Keywords critical theory, critical media pedagogy, media literacy, critical pedagogy, media, ideology, discourse, power, symbolic power, knowledge Abstract The theoretical dissertation analyzes the traditional media education model issues, which derives from the orientation of media literacy on the dominant paradigm of media effects research in media studies. Media education takes the "media effects concept" and uses it to organize its own teaching practice. Theoretical dependence on media studies and the concept media effects leads media education to protectionism and normativity, which is reflected in the directive establishment of knowledge, skills and values pupils may acquire. This situation has negative effect on efforts of developing critical media thinking as independent on social authorities. Moreover, media education potentially reproduces the dominant modes of knowledge about media and society, without revealing them as social constructions. The theoretical basis for changing the paradigm of media education to become more critical and transformative practice able to form the student's personality as an autonomous, critical- thinking and committed citizen is presented in the second...

Budnikovová, Petra ; Kartous, Bohumil (advisor) ; Wolák, Radim (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze how selected national newspapers and television inform the public about education and schooling. Four national newspapers, namely MF Dnes, Deník Právo, Hospodářské noviny and Lidové noviny, as well as four television stations: CT1, CT2, CT24 and TV Nova, were subjected to a quantitative content analysis. The whole research focused on outcomes of 2012. Firstly, it was necessary to describe different views of the definition of education. In addition to the definition of pedagogical focus, dictionary definitions, definitions of historical and ideological nature, we outlined how education is being perceived by selected opinion leaders, followed by an insight into the history and present state of the Czech education system. The results of the quantitative analysis confirmed the hypothesis assuming that media coverage of education and schooling is not sufficient. The media mainly deal with administration, activities of the Ministry of Education and other sub-themes that have nothing to do with what students learn in school within individual subjects. The results of this analysis were compared with the expectations of the target groups - parents. A survey was conducted including a series of semi-structured interviews, results of which indicate that parents are...
