PEDI - Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory: Practical Application in Occupational Therapy

Eliška Haškovcová Title: PEDI - Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory: Practical Application in Occupational Therapy The Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) is a standardized assessment developed in the USA. The PEDI samples key functional skills, caregiver assistance and modification in three content domains: self-care, mobility and social function. This thesis is aimed at the characterization of the PEDI and its practical application in occupational therapy. The theoretical part contains introduction of the PEDI, description of cooperation between occupational therapist and parents and brief description of functional skills development to the age of 7. Occupational therapists and parents information value of the PEDI is described in the practical part. The advantages and disadvantages for occupational therapist are also summarized. 20 assessments were used to achieve the aims of this theses. Feedback from the respondents was recieved using the anonymous online questionnaire. The detailed case study and graphs demonstrate the results of the research. This diploma thesis deals with the problematics of sensory processing with premature children. The aim of the thesis is to show the important role of an occupational therapist taking care of infants with perinatal risks already at NICU. Another aim of the thesis is to create an unofficial Czech translation of the standardized Toddler Sensory Profile 2 Test and use it to evaluate the quality of sensory processing with premature children and compare the results with those of children born in term. In the theoretical part, the classification of new- borns is described for better understanding and orientation, together with the risks premature birth brings and the role of an occupational therapist taking care of such children. In the thesis, the approach of Sensory Integration and a classification of Sensory Processing Disorders (SPD) are described. At the end of the theoretical part, the Sensory Profile 2 Test is further described, especially its part dedicated to toddlers (TSP2). The practical part is made of a quantitative research. In the research, the total number of 70 two-year-old toddlers were assessed using TSP2, out of which 44 were born premature and 26 in term. The Focus of this study is to present Pro-Active approach and its use in pediatric occupational therapy. The main goal is to find out the effect of the Pro-active approach to neurorehabilitation on function capability of children with spastic quadruparesis form of cerebral palsy. In the first part is presented an overview of the issue of the Pro-active approach, which is made on the basis of a literature search. Nine patients participate in this study. The pro-active approach was applied to all of them. The first case study acted as a pre- research, she had 4 months of therapy with 25 therapies. The other 8 case studies took place for 5-weeks, with occupational therapy 3 times a week. Participants were assessed with the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI), measurement of active and passive range of motion in joints at upper extremity and spasticity. Evaluation of model activities was also included. Comparison of initial and control assessment showed an improvement in all measured score. 6 participants had better score in PEDI. The Role of Occupational Therapist in the Process of Learning of Child with Cerebral Palsy in Order to Gain better Results in School

The part of rehabilitation in children with cerebral palsy (CP) is optimal education. Children with CP have severe problems with gross and fine motor skills, communication, perception and many other areas that influence their educational skills. It is important to provide these children with complex rehabilitation the goals of which are discussed by a team of professionals. In my thesis I tried to refer to work of a multidisciplinary team, especially the one of a special pedagogue and an occupational therapist in the process of learning child with CP. The main aim of my thesis was to monitor the current situation of occupational practice in the problematic of the role of an occupational therapist in the process of learning in child with CP. One of the goals was to find out the competence of an occupational therapist in the process of learning in a child with CP in school and to define possible occupational therapy interventions to influence the results of a child with CP in school. The theoretical part of the thesis provides information about basic characteristics of CP and the influence of special pedagogue and occupational therapist on a child with CP in school.
