Media Representation of Celebrities in Late-night Talk Show Format

This diploma thesis deals with the media representation of celebrities, as it is designed within the framework of the adopted American television format of the late-night talk show. In the first part of the thesis, attention is focused on problems of understanding of the phenomenon of celebrities by various authors, as well as on the development of the late-night talk show itself and its characteristic features. The theoretical starting point is the theory of representation (Hall), three levels of representation (Trampota) and social construction of reality (Berger, Luckmann). The method of critical discourse analysis is chosen for the research and the four principles for the analysis are described: commoditization, infotainment, personalization, congeniality. The practical part presents an analysis of the typical representation of celebrities due to the principles mentioned above in selected talk shows which were broadcast in English and Czech languages in 2015-2016, namely American The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Czech Jan Kraus Show. The Narratological Analysis of Novel King Rat by China Miéville

This thesis deals with the analysis of the British author's China Miéville's literary debut King Rat. For the analysis, I used especially semiotically/semiologically oriented narratology, the thesis therefore draws especially from the methods used in Roland Barthese's, Tzvetan Todorov's and Lubomír Doležel's works. It also uses methods of Gérard Genette, Seymour Chatman and Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan. I analysed categories from the domain of narratology, specifically: the narrator, story, characters, space (surroundings) and the time.

Film and Painting image of Oneiric Genre - The Problem of Interpretation

The subject of the thesis is a comparative analysis of sign production and the interpretation of the film and painting of oneiric or horror genre focused on Vall Lewton's films and their similarity to the painting in creating an atmosphere of uneasiness and fear. Although these works are based on a sign structure, which is an important key to their interpretation, they are not independent of the different interpretations they allow. On the contrary, it seems that the work's intention is to encourage the viewer to complete the art by projecting his own fear into it. This approach is based on Umberto Eco's and Jan Mukařovský's theory of the interpretation, both of which emphasizing the reader's role in understanding the principle of functioning of the work of art. The concepts of the model author and model reader in Eco's theory and the term semantic gesture within Mukařovský's work are sharing numerous similarities.

Private Archives - The Traces of Past in Our Present

The main topic of Master thesis with the title Private Archives - The Traces of Past in Our Present, is creation of private archives and how reading and work of French philosopher Gilles Deleuze support understanding of those archives and establishment of intimate history of human being. Private archives are represented by any object, collections of objects or by anything else what reminds to owner or author of archives his past and who is returning back to the past through this object. Private archives are present in life of human being and we are coming back to the archives whenever we consider it important and whenever we want. Private archives are the part of life of all of us and that is why I consider crucial to understand their functioning, their role in our life and to know how to use them. The private archives, unlike our memories, which can be mixed one into each other, represent concrete tool referring to our past. The master thesis includes the description of practical part which is represented by creation of private archive, the functioning and the characteristics are also described. Three philosophers who influenced Gilles Deleuze have their place in this master thesis as well. I am referring to Michel Foucault, Henri Bergson and Marcel Proust.

Milan Kundera and intertextuality

The diploma thesis Milan Kundera and Intertextuality deals with aspects of relations between the texts in his novels. The first part outlines the intertextuality, theory of the novel and the approaches of some literary theorists towards this issue. The second half of the thesis analyzes the intertextuality in Kundera's works in various forms, mainly based on the themes of dreams and physicality. The greatest emphasis is placed on examining the legacy of Kafka in the context of Kundera's works, particularly in the novels The Joke and The Book of Laughter and Forgetting. Thesis Intertextuality in the work of Milan Kundera deals with intertextuality facets in his novels theoretically and practically. This work deals with the text and the relations between one and other - with intertextuality and with novel genre theories. I work with four important theorist, Michail Bachtin, Julia Kristeva, Gerard Genette and Roland Barthes. I examine their concepts of polyphony or Socratic dialogue and apply them on Kundera. The role of the body in acquiring skills

The main topic of the master thesis is the exploration of a process of learning and acquitision of skills. In fact these processes are the important parts of a human life indeed. The issue of this topic is being considered through a different but certainly related topic - the rules and their function. The first part of this thesis consists of the analyses of several points of view on the topic of rules as a whole. The introduction of the thesis is supplemented with the theory of S. Blackmore speaking about the meaning of mems in our lifes. After the first part, where the work of J. Peregrin "A Man and rules" is analised, the other bigger charter begins with the analysis of M. Merleau-Ponty point of view on a human body and embodiment - the essence of a human being. In fact the studies of S. Curtiss and A. S. Benzaquen are the sources of the particular cases that are closely connected with the topic of the previous chapters of the thesis and that close the thesis.
