New measures of weak non-compactness
Bendová, Hana ; Kalenda, Ondřej (advisor) ; Holický, Petr (referee)
The main topic of this thesis is the measures of weak non-compactness, which, in different ways, measure weak non-compactness of bounded sets in Banach spa- ces. Besides some known measures of weak non-compactness, we introduce new measures, that are more natural in some sense, and we show the relationships be- tween them. We prove quantitative versions of Eberlein-Grothendieck, Eberlein- Šmulian, and James' theorems. Afterwards, we deal with measures of weak non-compactness of the unit ball and measures of weak non-compactness of sets in Banach spaces with w∗ -angelic dual unit ball. We prove that in these cases some of the defined measures coincide. Finally, we focus on the behaviour of the defined measures while passing to convex and absolute convex hull. We prove quantitative version of Krein's theorem and we also prove that most of the mea- sures do not change when passing to convex and absolute convex hull in Banach spaces with w∗ -angelic dual unit ball.
Domestication of TV news
Fišerová, Sylvie ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Bendová, Helena (referee)
The rigorous thesis deals with the question of how and why are the evening news used in the family environment. It approaches this topic from the perspective of auditorial approach of cultural studies, takes for granted the existence of autonomous active audience. It informs about the key studies of social use of media, e.g. the typology of social use or role of gender in the attitude to media, and it deals with the question of relation of children and media. Further part of work is devoted to the news, its characteristics and the possible social use of this format by specific members of the family. These concepts are consequently used as tools for the research itself. The research of social use of the evenenig news is carried out with the help of qualitative grounded theory. In the empirical part the author arrives to the following conclusions: the main motivation for watching news is informative use, though at the same time it is used as a coulisse to other activities, most often bathing children and preparing or eating dinner. The most widespreaded type of watching news might be described as "monitoring", when television news viewing is secondary to some other primary activity. Viewers in this mode watch the broadcast just enough to keep up with what is happening on the screen. Evening news is not much...

Recent Chinese Independent Documentary film (1990-2018) and its Relantionship to Practice of Censorship
Honcoop, Haruna ; BENDOVÁ, Helena (advisor) ; LOMOVÁ, Olga (referee)
This diploma thesis describes the situation of independent documentary film in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) over the last three decades (1990–2018), dividing the period into three phases. Focusing on key filmmakers and their work, the thesis illustrates the obstacles and opportunities that independent filmmakers navigate when producing and distributing films outside of the system of censorship. The PRC’s censorship system is described in a short historical review which culminates in the recently-issued Censorship Law of 2017 and its practical provisions, thus clarifying the mechanisms of surveillance and regulation which affect how documentary filmmakers work. Important film festivals and centres of the independent documentary movement are described in chronological order, as well as the disappearance of such activities following the accession to power of the current ruling elite in 2012. Because recent conditions prohibit the free distribution of non-censored films, this thesis pays attention to important support provided by international documentary film festivals, their programmers and curators, and archivists and researchers from Western universities. Finally, the thesis analyzes filmmakers‘ reactions to the current situation, which range from ignorance and obedience, through self-censorship to protest resulting in imprisonment or exile. Finally, the thesis mentions the methods in totalitarian China of nowadays used in controlling the filmmakers and the complete society through digital technologies.

Female heroines in the selected Marleen Gorris' films
Vlasáková, Klára ; BENDOVÁ, Helena (advisor) ; KAJÁNKOVÁ, Lucia (referee)
The master’s thesis focuses on three selected films by a Dutch filmmaker Marleen Gorris (A Question of Silence [De stilte rond Christine M.], Antonia, and Mrs. Dalloway). The text examines the way the film female characters are depicted, their relationship to the patriarchal society they live in and the forms of their possible resistance to a given social order. An ideological analysis used for that purpose enables to explore both values, beliefs or prejudices of a certain content, as well as motivation and power relationships the content is based on.
