The cantata and oratorio works of Jan Hanuš: musical-historical context and pedagogical use

The thesis consciously builds on previous literature devoted to the life and work of Jan Hanuš, a significant 20th-century Czech composer. It focuses on his cantata and oratorio works, which form a distinctive part of the author's legacy. The thesis aims not only to study the defined area of interest from due theoretical perspectives, but also to intervene in relevant related practical fields: the field of artistic interpretation and the field of music pedagogy. The first, theoretically focused goal is to map the entire defined area of Hanuš's output in the context of musical and social development during the 20th century, in the context of related music by other Czech composers, and in the context of Hanuš's personal compositional development. The second goal is to bring one of the selected works, Poselství: svědectví o smrti Jana Palacha (The Legacy: A Testimony on the Death of Jan Palach) from 1969, to a world premiere in the symbolic and social context that the work deserves. The third goal is to create didactic material that uses the specifics of the studied area of Hanuš's work to bring the musical language of contemporary artificial music closer to today's students of general music education. Musical-liturgical life of the Jesuit college at Klatovy in the 18th century

The Jesuit College in Klatovy and the adjoining St. Joseph Seminary represented an important phenomenon of the local cultural, religious and musical life of 17th and 18th centuries. By gradual building of the monastery complex Jesuits were a major influence on the town's character and their activities in the field of spiritual and cultural life did not fall behind their architectonic ones. In the town Jesuit religious fraternities were working, the town people could watch the school play performances and, last but not least, took part in numerous religious feasts organized by the order. In all these occasions especially figural music played an important role. The era of the order's activity in the town (16361773) was part of the period in which the order tolerated such music performances, however the contemporary sources show that there was strict differences were made between the repertoir played on purpose of the outer representation of the order and accompaniment of internal divine service. Basic institutional platform of the musical life was St. Joseph Seminary, operating within the college since its very foundation. Although compared to other similar order seminaries elsewhere it did not dispose of large musical endowments, it could supply accomodation, food, clothing and musical tuition to as many as...

Improvisation as a musical-pedagogical discipline in the preparation of organists for the liturgical environment. MgA. Jan Steyer Abstract The dissertation solves the issue of organ improvisation in the liturgical environment in the Czech Republic and focusing mainly on the pedagogical aspect of the topic. The first part deals with theoretical problems. Improvisation is defined, classified and put into context of psychology and history. There is also a mapping of the position of organ improvisation in the liturgy on the basis of church regulations. The second part of the work is a research about the situation among church organists in the Czech Republic. Using the questionnaire, basic data on the researched group were obtained (age, gender, general and musical education, place of organ action and information about organ liturgical practice). In addition, the research analyzes the musical theoretical and practical playing skills of church organists. There is also a finding of educational requirements of research participants and description of their own experience with organ courses and various methodological procedures in teaching improvisation. Music Culture of the Elisabethan Convent in Prague Jakub Michl Abstract The Sisters of Saint Elizabeth (Elizabethan Nuns) were a spiritual order primarily focused on administering healthcare. Therefore, music was never the main focus of the order's activities, as it often was in others, particularly educational orders. However, thanks to the uninterrupted historical continuity of the Prague convent, which was exempted from the restrictions of Joseph II's era, many sources illustrating the convent music culture were preserved, including an extensive collection of music. The dissertation aims to describe this music culture in the context of the order structure and its personal hierarchy, as part of the city of Prague and its civic institutions, and in its everyday life and characteristics such as enclosure, hospital service and recreational activities. Music in convents was always tightly bound to liturgy. In the case of the Elizabethan order, significant music production was focused on the order's main liturgical feasts such as S. Elizabeth, S. Francis of Assisi, Porciuncula, Christmas, Epiphany, Easter and also memorial services for deceased patrons of the convent. The convent cooperated with many lay musicians and composers such as F. X.
