The architecture of Nelahozeves Castle
Víšková, Martina ; Nespěšná Hamsíková, Magdaléna (advisor) ; Šmied, Miroslav (referee)
The aim of the bachelor thesis "The architecture of Nelahozeves Castle" was to summarize existing knowledge and to compare different opinions. If it was possible I tried ground opinions which appear correct opposite other by arguments. Emphasis was set to architectural patterns of Sebastiano Serlio. Some of the questions stay still open for example the question authorship of Nelahozeves Castle. The first chapter of my thesis introduces historical and cultural context and also pays attention in detail to Florian Griespek, the builder of Nelahozeves Castle. In addition, it mentions his earlier construction of the castle in Kaceřov with which the object of my interest has some links. A reference to fortress architecture is also incorporated. This is followed by the main part of the work, the chapter on Nelahozeves Castle. After a general introduction and history of the village, a list of owners and somewhat complicated issue of construction process are presented. A relatively extensive section is devoted to the description and analysis of architecture with an emphasis on the books by Sebastiano Serlio. Links to the Italian and Czech buildings are also briefly mentioned. The last chapter addresses the difficult question of Nelahozeves Castle authorship and is concluded with an overall assessment of the building.
Oasis in the heart of Europe. Orientalism in Czech architecture of the 19th century
Vránová, Veronika ; Šmied, Miroslav (advisor) ; Czumalo, Vladimír (referee)
Europe of the early 19th century is searching for its new artistic persona. Several new and distinct directions come into being, all vying for a spot on the landscape of arts and for the leading position. This desire to search for new directions deepens Europe's interest in the Orient. Meeting of the West with the East goes all the way back to early Middle Ages and manifests through several phases all the way to the present day. Fascination by the Orient in the 19th century was connected mainly to Napoleon's Egypt campaign, Greek uprising against the Turks, France's conquest of Northern Africa, World Exhibition in London and excursions into exotic lands themselves undertaken by contemporary enthusiasts. The wave of orientalism permeated all levels of fine art. It is most often seen in painting, graphic arts and photography and seen the least in sculpture. The thesis follows the orientalism phenomenon from the end of 18th century to the First World War. The goal is to provide some insight into its influence on areas of the fine arts in central Europe and provide background for future research in doing so. Key focus of the thesis is the research of exotic tendencies in architecture in the Kingdom of Bohemia and presenting it in the context of oriental architecture of other countries under the...

Residental architecture at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in Zbraslav focusing on the villa Planá růže
Nováková, Markéta ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Šmied, Miroslav (referee)
Annotation: This dissertation focuses on villa architecture at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, the causes for its development and its purpose. It focuses mainly on the area of the capital city of Prague and its vicinity as this is where the majority of buildings are situated. It pays close attention to historicism, an architectural movement that drew its inspiration from the art of the past. It explores the contemporary attitude towards and perception of this then new style of architecture. Having considered historicism and its influence, this work shifts its focus towards the origin and historical development of the town Zbraslav, which became a popular location for this emerging style of villa architecture at the turn of the 19th and 20th Century. In this town, the primary focus is the villa Plana Ruze from 1898, an interesting example of late historicism due to its neorenaissance gable, secessionist frescoes and a corner tower facing South-East. This is then compared to the Villa Flora and the Villa U Male Reky 621, which are also characterized by the South East facing corner tower.

I will be focusing on the personality of the writer, collector, a well-known japanophile and a promulgator of the land of Nippon, Joe Hloucha, who brought this culture to the public not only through his novels but through buildings and constructions built in the first half of the twentieth century as well. As a conclusion of my thesis, I will try to make a summary of Hloucha's view of Japan and its culture. Keywords architecture, japonisms, Japan, Czech lands, Joe Hloucha

Relic cross of Charles IV.
Melkus, René ; Sojka, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Šmied, Miroslav (referee)
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to present a historical, art-historical, and technological review of the most precious piece of the St. Vitus cathedral treasure - the great Provincial Cross, also known as the Karlstein Cross, or simply the Relic Cross. This prominent creation of High Gothic goldsmithing is linked with the Emperor and King Charles IV (1316-1378) and the year 1357, when the construction of Karlstein castle was finished. This monographic thesis deals solely with the Cross and strives to summarize all existing historical knowledge, while processing literature and sources in the usual heuristic manner. Above all, the thesis includes a thorough description of this craftsmanship artifact, followed by an art-historical interpretation. It aims to differ from other theses in its passion regarding the goldsmithing techniques and its effort to comprehend the medieval means of processing precious metals and gems. The author has chosen this subject in order to familiarize himself with common technological terminology and to use it properly. Therefore, the thesis becomes a theoretical preparation for the author's self-dependent work as a curator in the National Technical Museum in Prague.
