Revivals of Forms and Styles in Visual Art: Current Hyperrealism as Product of Postproduction or a Commentary on the Advent of New Media
Hrnčířová, Markéta ; Borecký, Felix (advisor) ; Šafaříková, Radana (referee)
The book Postproduction: Culture as Screenplay, written by French aesthetician Nicolas Bourriaud is going to be initial text for my diploma thesis. Bourriaud claims, that contemporary art is mostly made by the principle of assemblage; art works are made by reinterpretation, reproducing or by new exhibiting of artefacts or forms of past. The assumption of the original concept in artworks of contemporary artists - semionauts (travelers in the worlds of signs) has been allready completely ineffective. Through the example of hyperrealistic paintings, which has lately reappeared in portfolios of international and czech artists, I will try to show whether its revilal is based on the emergence of new medias, that even more than in the seventies simulate reality or whether they deal with the concept of postpostprodution - the artists lend only formal, in this case, hyperrealistic, signs. This diploma thesis will be completed by the case study of paintings of czech hyperrealist painter Jan Mikulka.

Système de la Mode by Roland Barthes: Critique of the Model and Limits of Application
Lorencová, Petra ; Šafaříková, Radana (advisor) ; Fišerová, Michaela (referee)
In this thesis we will try to explain and clarify the main concepts of R. Barthes's semiological method introduced in his book Système de la Mode. The key moments of his model will be confronted with critique of other authors such as J. Culler, T. Todorov or D. N. Rodowick. The principal aim of Barthes's book is to create a precise method which would lead the structural analysis of women's clothing described by fashion magazines. The author believes, that vestimentary features presented in fashion magazines are constituted into a system of signification. Barthes's main intention has been to reconstitute this system of meaning and to create a classification of written garment using linguistic approach and procedures. After considering the critique of the above-mentioned authors, we will try to apply Barthes's concepts to some examples of written garment, taken from current fashion magazines, in order to better understand author's semiological project.

In this work we would like to explore similarities and distinctions between two paramount theories of the history of the media developed by two communication theorists of the last century Vilém Flusser and Marshall McLuhan. Vilém Flusser and Marshall McLuhan both developed original and specific models of the history of the culture. Vilém Flusser has formed the history according to the most popular communication code in the period. Marshall McLuhan has formed periods of the history according to the technology, which was dominant in the period. We will describe all important arguments and the starting points from which both authors result in creating their phasing of the history of the media. Consequently we will compare both models of the history of the media and we will show to the meeting and disagreeing points in their theories. We are going to analyze the hypothesis, that even if authors departure from different starting points, they find in their theories meeting points. Both theories of the history of the media describe new problems, which are occuring in the present and authors are suggesting the possibilities how to approach them and how to manage them. They warn of the influence of the technical images, which important influence on the man is by many people underestimated. By describing McLuhan's...
The Semiotics of Han Tombs
Laštovková, Andrea ; Šafaříková, Radana (advisor) ; Nešpor, Zdeněk (referee)
The master thesis called "Semiotics Han Tombs" does not only deal with the semiotics view of space of Han dynasty tombs, when we are examining the number of structures, which are permeating Han graves, we find structures of the world of man living in China, but this process also points to problems of culture interpretation which cultural semiotics helps to eliminate. Problems associated with the sign plays an important role in shaping the very cultural and social identity. The issue of understanding and interpretation of cultures occurs at the time when we select certain features or characters from the structure of a culture to freely create a system without having analyzed the real culture. Always all these elements must be considered in the context of the overall system or structure, or we only deal with empty concepts or definitions. In other words, we do not see the whole picture. Han tomb as a text is polysemous and in many respects incomprehensible. However, the creation, reading and semiosis takes place in it and it is the statement of understanding of this world. So revealing the speaker's worldview depends on the process of interpretation, because the statement may involve a degree of ideological connotations which determined the interpretation independently on the previous coding. Key...
