Picture - Sound borders

This thesis is about possibilities in sound production within audio-vision. Thanks to the experiment, in which five sound designers make five different soundtracks for the same film, there is a pursue to define restrictions for sound design, that comes from the picture itself, and ways, in which we can ifluence the resault just by sound. For this reason, each soundtrack is analyzed and compared.

The thesis deals with the theme of awarding Oscars by the American film academy and films that were awarded in the sound categories. The first part is about the history of the Academy and the voting system concerning nominations and the winning films.
The second part includes an analysis of the sound components of the chosen films that were awarded. The aim is to monitor the development of the sound during the course of almost 85 years and to reveal the secrets of the success.

Allen, Malick, Coens and their voice-over narration

The goal of this MA thesis is to point out the legitimacy and specificity of voice-over narration as an expressive device in film. Although it is generally underestimated a priori, voice-over has peculiar qualities which, when put to good use, contribute to establish the intended tone of the film. I document the distinctiveness of this narrative device on analyses of films by Woody Allen, Terrence Malick, and the Coen brothers, who are well-known for incorporating voice-over in their narrative styles.

Music as a Part of the Inner World of film

This thesis deals with the use of music, a factor which strongly affects the viewer's emotions. This is particularly true with respect to its position relative to the image - an important factor affecting its functioning in the film. I start with the theoretical works that analyze the problem, how the viewer in the cinema hears the sounds and what impact it has on their different positions to the image. Principles of film music also influenced the long-term development of cinema. This process was accompanied today's over-use of music. In many cases, the authors ignore the consequences caused by its position. Specific examples of films will help us understand the whole issue. The position of music is not always easily determinable. Work will help us understand the importance of integrating musical part in the film. If music is sophisticated and connected with the world of film, the viewer can concentrate and perceive the film as art.
