Comparison of the teaching of literature at Czech and French secondary schools

The thesis deals with the issue of the literary canon. It compares the requirements of the school- leaving exam in the mother tongue and the literature in the Czech Republic and in France and it explores different approaches to the interpretation of the literary work and to the textual analysis. The thesis analyzes skills and knowledge that pupils demonstrate in the school-leaving exam, proportions of the linguistic and the literary parts, requirements for the academic writing and the oral speech and types of the outputs of the school-leaving exam. Furthermore, it deals with the approach to the teaching of the literary education in the Czech Republic in the 21st century with regard to the French approach. Historical, cultural and social background that influenced today's perceptions of literature in both countries is discussed. In the research part the conclusions of analyzes of the Czech and French textbooks of literary education are presented. The aim is to compare the different approaches to the content and to the structuring of the curriculum, as well as the approaches to the work with the literary text. Current Trends in the French Children's Literature

The beginning section of this thesis named Current Trends in the French Children's Literature is focused on a terminology concerning key theoretical terms in children's literature. Further content is focused on the history of children's literature, including a brief overview of the period and examples of the key works. There is a list of Major international and French literary prizes given to authors of children's books. The complex relationship between author and reader was also examined. The next part of the thesis is primarily focused on a literary analysis of three French novels for teenagers published at the beginning of the 21st century: Toby Alone by Timothée de Fombelle, La vie, en gros by Mikaël Ollivier and Oscar and the Lady in Pink by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt. Emphasis is put not only on basic characteristics of contemporary children's literature but also on the singularity of these literary works. The problems of literary translation from French into a quite other language are covered in the final part of the thesis. The translator has to move a literary text into the target language and carry the distinctive character of a work, its idioms and tone. Louis Leger, mediator of the Czech-French cultural relationships

Abstract: Louis Leger, french Slavophile, Slavicist and promoter of Czech issues in France in the second half of the 19th century, led correspondence with leading figures of the French nation as well as with the personalities of the Slavic word. Leger's correspondence with the Czech national elite is evidence of his interest in the Czech issue. Correspondence written in Czech and French is stored in the Literary Archive of the Museum of Czech Literature in Prague. The aim of this thesis is to discuss the Leger's written correspondence and present its contents to readers with regard to the historical context.

Abstract The thesis entitled De l'implication du metteur en scène dans l'interprétation de Tartuffe examines the most important problems and storylines in two stage interpretations of Tartuffe. The aim of this thesis is to compare the play in French and Czech and analyze the similarities and differences between two versions. Moreover, this work is intended to show how directors at La Comedie-Française and Realistické Divadlo put the comedy on the stage guided by their personal perception of the original text or translation and to what extent they follow the rules of classicism. The thesis consists of an introduction, a methodological section, seven main chapters and a conclusion. The introduction is devoted to a general description of Molière and King Louis XIV. The methodological section outlines the structure of the thesis. The following chapters constitute the core of the thesis. The first chapter delineates the traces of religion in Tartuffe and the reasons why Molière was not allowed to put on this play for a long time. Identity and variations in the novel Lignes de faille by Nancy Huston

The present study compares identity formation of the narrators in the novel Lignes de faille, who are six years old children of four consecutive generations. The aim of the thesis is to link and analyze two basic elements of Huston's creation, namely identity and variations. The first part of the study deals with the definition of identity and then describes the stages of identity formation according to the psychosocial concept of Erik H. Erikson. Afterwards, the thesis outlines family environment factors such as family composition, parenting style or religious denomination that contribute to the formation of identity. The second part of the comparative study focuses on the similarities and differences between the four children stories of which the novel is composed. The analysis deals with variations related to body perception, religious beliefs and family models. The thesis provides a point of view of the identity formation of the children and at the same time shows how the reactions to the factors that affect this formation resemble or differ across the four stories.

The aim of the thesis is to find out if and how the expectations of the readers change with their literary context and to discover the extent to which the contemporary writers Petr Nikl and Philippe Lechermeier come to meet their audiences. To answer this question various methodological procedures are employed: observation and then comparison of Czech and French literary context to form the hypotheses. The hypotheses are verified by the case study based on the analyses of two books (Záhádky by Petr Nikl and Le Journal secret de Petit Poucet form Philippe Lechermeier) and on the analyses of critical reviews and comments. We discovered the writer's strategies and the expectations of the readers and we compared them with our hypotheses to make a final appraisal.
