Public space in housing estates: the case of Southwest City in Prague
Jílek, Tomáš ; Špačková, Petra (advisor) ; Brabec, Tomáš (referee)
Public space is an important part of the urban environment and plays an important role in everyday leisure. High quality public space helps to improve the image of urban areas, attracts visitors, and can create attractive conditions for the concentration of services. Southwest City was built as one of the last housing estates in Prague. New residential projects are still being built on its territory, which together with the original historical buildings and housing estates form a unique urban unit. This bachelor thesis aims to develop its own method to evaluate the public space. The method consists of six aspects - physical condition, visual condition, concept of locality, locality cleanliness, maintenance of green space and social climate. The other part of the thesis is also to determine if there is a relationship between the quality of the public space and the type of housing development and how the different aspects evaluating the quality of the public space relate to each other. The results of the thesis suggest that there are qualitative and spatial differences in the design of public space in the Southwest City area. Also, the relationship between the type of housing development and the quality of public space was found. The physical condition and cleanliness of the public space locality can...
BUILDING A PLACE ATTACHMENT AMONG HOUSING ESTATE RESIDENTS: A CASE STUDY OF THE ĎÁBLICE AND SPOŘILOV HOUSING ESTATES
Bečvář, Daniel ; Špačková, Petra (advisor) ; Veselý, Martin (referee)
The thesis deals with the topic of place attachment, i.e. the emotional bond of a person to a place, in this case to the place of residence, with a focus on residents of socialist housing estates. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the theoretical background. It discusses, on the one hand, the available literature on the development of place attachment, the ways of measuring it or the psychological nature of this attachment itself. Also, the phenomenon of modernist housing estates and their contemporary image is described in this part. In the second, empirical part, the aim is to find out how place attachment is formed among the residents of the housing estates, what further influences this relationship, and how this process of evolving differs in the two estates. The research is qualitative in nature and the main method of data collection is semi-structured interviews. The case study was carried out in two housing estates in Prague, which differ both in size and in how well they are known by the general public - the Ďáblice housing estate and the Spořilov housing estate. In this work, three mechanisms leading to the development of place attachment were identified - growing local familiarity, intensive time spent on the estate, and civic engagement. In addition to the mechanisms, the...
Influence of large-scale urban projects on neighbourhood transformation: the case of Nový Smíchov and Smíchovské train station
Šrámek, Vít ; Petrovic, Adél (advisor) ; Špačková, Petra (referee)
This paper focuses on the urban transformation processes in Smíchov and how they influence the physical condition of housing stock there. Only some of the neighborhoods of Prague were analyzed when it comes to gentrification or other urban transformation processes, and even fewer have had their housing stock monitored. This paper then tries to fill a part of this gap. Academic and field research were carried out, and field research analyzing the spatial distribution and physical condition of the housing stock surrounding the two selected case studies in the neighborhood. The results show that the monitored areas around Nový Smíchov and Smíchov train station are generally in good condition with some room for improvement and a few modern building clusters. Based on the condition of the analysis of the housing stock, I answer the research questions: 1) What is the current state of the neighborhood? 2) How did it change in the last (approx. 20 years)? 3) What is the new dominating aesthetic?, 4) What are the possible predictions for the neighborhood's future development?, 5) Who are the main stakeholders influencing these changes, and what does their involvement imply? and draw conclusions, as well as present an actor's map. The actor's maps serve as a great way to capture the relationships behind the...
Regeneration and physical condition of residential buildings in housing estates in Prague
Mýl, Jiří ; Špačková, Petra (advisor) ; Dvořáková, Nina (referee)
Housing estates are an essential part of postsocialist cities, including Prague. Since the collapse of the socialist regime, their future has been a subject of discussion. First opinions about them degrading severely didn't come true. Instead many of them were renovated at least to some extent. This bachelor thesis builds upon on an analysis carried out by the Institute of planning and development (published in 2011) and aims to assess the revitalization process and understand the current scope of the revitalization of panel buildings in larges housing estates in Prague. It also describes the evolution of changes in the revitalization and the effects of selected factors on revitalization. Lastly, it showcases specific examples of the revitalization of Prague housing estates. The results of the work point to a significant scope of revitalization, yet it is possible to observe certain differences between individual housing estates and their parts. The influence of most analyzed factors was not confirmed. The construction period can be characterized as the most significant. A relationship between the share of foreign nationals and the extent of revitalization wals also found, a finding that would be worth further verification and possibly deeper investigation. Key words: housing estates,...
Residential mobility and residential preferences of young families and older adults from the Prague Metropolitan Area
Horňáková, Marie ; Špačková, Petra (advisor) ; Kostelecký, Tomáš (referee) ; Hoření Samec, Tomáš (referee)
The dissertation project examines the process of residential mobility and residential preferences in the Prague Metropolitan Area. With the diversification of life-course trajectories and lifestyles, but also rising housing prices, residential mobility and residential preferences have become more heterogeneous and ambiguous. The research aims to investigate new emerging patterns of residential mobility and residential preferences, and to explore how the selection of a new home is performed. The study focuses on two population groups: middle-class young families and middle-class older adults (empty nesters, seniors). A mixed-method research approach is adopted, combining quantitative and qualitative research methods. The study contributes to filling the gap in knowledge on residential mobility in post-socialist cities and the process of housing choice among young families and older adults.
Long-term development of age structure of housing estates residents: comparison of Prague and Ostrava
Červenka, Jakub ; Špačková, Petra (advisor) ; Dvořáková, Nina (referee)
Panel houses in socialist housing estates belong among dominant forms of housing in Czechia. Mainly young families with children were moving into new housing estates right after their construction was completed, but the following development of residents' composition wasn't the same in all housing estates. Significant social changes after the Velvet Revolution contributed greatly to the differentiation of housing estates' development. This paper aims to describe overall changes of housing estates in Prague and Ostrava between 1970 and 2011 in terms of age structure, to find differences between both cities and to identify main trajectories of housing estates' development. Descriptive statistics were used for the analysis as well as more advanced analytical methods represented by location quotients and sequence analysis. The results show that population of housing estates was very young at the beginning, but has aged significantly in the following decades. Housing estates in Ostrava have always been younger than the ones in Prague, however, they are gradually equalizing. Large number of housing estates has had tendency to stabilize their age structure in the same form as the structure of the whole city. Key words: housing estates, age structure, demographic ageing, Prague, Ostrava

Hrušková, Nela ; Špačková, Petra (advisor) ; Kopečná, Martina (referee)
The main aim of the bachelor thesis is to describe the social structure of the population and social climate in suburbs Mlada Boleslav. In relation to immigration around the city there are changes of population size and population structure of municipalities, which is related to an increase in the differences among local residents. This is due to differentiation in terms of social status, traditions, behaviour and age. In this work are evaluated primarily the impacts of these differences on the relationship between the local population and people who moved recently. The paper is trying to figure out the level of involvement of newcomers in the running community and define problems and types of cooperation among these groups. I assume that it will be some variations between municipalities, but generally it will have similar problems and positives which were found in studies in suburbs of Prague. I also discuss whether, or how, is the process influenced by Škoda Auto, which is located in Mlada Boleslav. Keywords: suburbanization, social structure, social climate
