Od doby svého vzniku a prvního použití během Druhé světové války se jaderné zbraně staly velice účinným mocenským prostředkem v mezinárodních vztazích. Právě kvůli uvědomění si jejich obrovské ničivé síly se staly během období studené války politickým nástrojem k vzájemnému odstrašování obou soupeřících světových supervelmocí, tedy USA a SSSR. Jinak tomu není ani v dnešní době, kdy se jaderné zbraně ještě zdokonalily a rozšířily i mezi ostatní státy a proto jejich politický a mocenský význam hraje velkou roli v mezinárodních vztazích i nyní. Staly se součástí strategického myšlení a velkou roli hrají převážně v nátlakové diplomacii, kde fungují především jako manipulativní nástroj k dosažení požadovaného cíle. Ač se tato taktika, založená na vyvolání strachu z potencionálního ničivého jaderného útoku, zdá být velice účinná, vyskytují se v ní i značná rizika a nevýhody. Do nátlakové diplomacie totiž spadá taktika donucovací a odstrašovací a kvůli rozdílnosti obou koncepcí se role jaderných zbraní mezi nimi do jisté míry liší, na což poukazují i někteří experti, věnující se tomuto tématu. Abychom dokázali zhodnotit efektivitu jaderných zbraní v nátlakové diplomacii, je potřeba zdůraznit tyto rozdílnosti a poukázat na ně při názorných případech z moderní historie. Since the creation and first use during the Second world war, nuclear weapons have become very effective means of power in international relations. Because of realization of their huge destructive force, they have become to be an political tool of mutual deterrence during the cold war among both world great powers of that time - USSR and USA. There is same situation in today's world, when nuclear weapons are even better and they are spreaded among other countries. They become to be important element of strategic thinking and play crucial role in coercive diplomacy, where they operate especially as manipulative tool of achieving the desired goal. Even though this tactic seems to be very effective, there are some considerable risks and disadvantages. In coercive diplomacy, we distinguish deterrent strategy and compellent strategy and because of dissimilarity between these two concepts, the role od nuclear weapons differs, which i salso pointe dout by some of the experts, who are interested in this topic. To be able to evaluate effectivness of nuclear weapons in coercive diplomacy, we need to point out these differnces and demonstrate them on related historical events.
