(English): The aim of this bachelor thesis is a profound insight into the novel Hüter der Freude (1918) by the Prague German writer Paul Leppin (1878-1945). First, the author and his work are concisely introduced. In the main part I concentrate on social and cultural life in Prague shortly before the turn of the century. Emanating from the novel, I compare the results of a textual analysis with the so far released publications which deal with Prague German literature and life in Prague at the beginning of the 20th century. In the end the reader should primarily have an idea of what social life looked like at the time in which the novel takes place. In addition, I want to find out how Leppinʼs description of Prague corresponds to reality and to what extent it differs. Due to the given scope of the work and the large amount of literature published in this field, it is not possible nor the intent of this work to present a historical study of social life in Prague. It is rather the matter of providing an insight into Leppinʼs ways of describing his surroundings because Prague always was an important topic for the author and played a major role in all his publications as well as in his life. (česky): Tato práce se zabývá románem Hüter der Freude pražského německy píšícího autora Paula Leppina (1878-1945), vydaným v roce 1918. První část práce se věnuje ve dvou úvodních kapitolách stručnému představení autora a prostředí, ve kterém žil a tvořil, tedy Prahy na přelomu devatenáctého a dvacátého století. Hlavní část je pak věnována dílu samotnému a jeho možným přesahům do reality. Důraz je při tom kladen na společenský a kulturní život předválečné Prahy. Vycházela jsem vždy na prvním místě z románu samotného, výsledky analýzy textu jsem poté porovnávala s doposud publikovanou sekundární literaturou, která se zabývá pražskou německou literaturou nebo historickou Prahou. Po přečtení této práce by měl čtenář získat představu, jak přibližně vypadala Praha v době krátce předcházející vzniku díla a do jaké míry její popis v románu odpovídá realitě, popř. do jaké míry je výplodem Leppinovy fantazie. Vzhledem k zadané délce bakalářských prací a k objemu dostupné literatury k danému tématu není však možné (a není to ani cílem), aby byla tato práce považována za historickou studii. Jde především o to, zprostředkovat vhled do stylu, jakým Leppin popisuje Prahu, která hrála důležitou roli jak v jeho životě, tak v jeho tvorbě.
