Westernization of Pop Culture in China - "China's Got Talent"

This master thesis deals with the phenomenon of Westernization of pop culture in mainland China on the example of the Chinese adapted version of the Talent Show China's Got Talent. (CHGT) In its theoretical part it outlines the overall globalizing and Westernizing tendencies and sets a theoretical framework of the main terminology of media studies. The research goal of the thesis was to analyze the audience reception of CHGT in China and their ideas and views on pop culture The research goal is included in the broader context of cultural imperialism theories and the specifics of talent and reality shows are elaborated. Furthermore a historical overview of the evolution of pop culture in mainland China is provided. In the practical part, the applied methodological approaches and their potential strengths and weaknesses are described. A basic thematic analysis of certain selected social media like Weibo, QQ and Baidu was conducted. The two versions of the adapted Got Talent format were compared as far as the formal features are concerned, the British version of Britain's Got Talent and the Chinese adaptation China's Got Talent. The Veiling Issue in Turkey Today

This diploma thesis deals with the veiling issue in Turkey. The first theoretical part is trying to map out the issues with an emphasis on the diverse interpretations and perceptions of the scarf / hijab. The work perceives the scarf as a symbol which represents more than just the Islamic religion. These multiple interpretations were caused primarily by the historical development of the country, especially the specific modernization process of Turkey which has been linked to the process of westernization. Mainly because of this the headscarf was for many years regarded as something obsolete, unfashionable. Many people perceived the scarf as something that does not belong in modern Turkey. This situation had affect the veilling issue a lot. Women were prohibited by law to wear a scarf in public areas. For this reason the work shows this issue also in the historical context which goes back to the 19th century - to the Ottoman Empire. The second part comprises the empirical part is devoted to qualitative research. Transformation of Japan into a modern state - Meiji Reform

This study is about Japan's transformation caused by intervention of Western Civilization, which made Japan suffer partial loss of state sovereignty. The power structure, which brooked the loss inflicted by strong Western Civilization, crumbled and new government tried to correct this loss for taking back Japan's full sovereignty. In the process of dealing with the West, Japan started to collect knowledge and take over some concepts, which caused changes in japanese national identity and its shaping close to the model of Western Civilization. The objective of this study is to point out that this transformation is best and enough thoroughly explained by the changes in japanese national identity and taking over knowledge, ideas, principles and intellectual concepts of Western Civilization.

The Bulgarian involvement in NATO (1995-2014)

The thesis deals with the topic of the Bulgarian foreign and security policy in the post-communist era. The theoretical part is focused on the neo-realistic concept of security, as well as the terms security policy and the matters regarding the alliance formation. In the context of European post-socialist countries and their integration with the European and Trans-Atlantic alliances, Bulgaria occupies, due to the traditional historically justified warm relations to Russia, a unique position. Another important component of this unique process is the balkanization of the Bulgarian foreign policy which concentrated on the relations with the neighboring countries -- Greece, Turkey, Romania, Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia -- at the expense of the westernization. Therefore, the attitude towards the neighbors and the relations to them with regard to their respective historical and cultural background are included as well. Only after taking into account the Balkan circumstances it is possible to study the process of the Bulgarian voyage to the full membership in NATO and the revision of the Bulgarian doctrinal documents connected with it. The thesis closes with a thorough analysis of the Bulgarian participation in out-of-area operations in Cambodia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq including in addition to general information about these missions themselves.
